Do the Americans not realise that.. like every single one of them going back 4-5 generations are immigrants? Very few native Americans are out there because of immigration.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 57 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Just as most Americans who have moved to other countries refuse to call themselves immigrants, and default to calling themselves "expats", most don't seem to get that, no.

[–] Successful_Try543@feddit.org 12 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (4 children)

Isn't an expat usually somebody who is sent abroad for work by his employee?

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Sure, but that only seems to apply to Americans, and in some parts Brits.

[–] kiwifoxtrot@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago

It is less of a US thing, and more of a class thing. Expats are temporary work assignments overseas usually for high paying leadership positions.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

An expat is anyone who lives outside of their native country while intending to return, while an immigrant is someone who moves to another country permanently.

One reason why you rarely hear about American "immigrants" to other countries is that it is absurdly hard to relinquish US citizenship. So even if an American were to gain citizenship elsewhere, they still owe US income tax, and are reminded of their status every April.

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 months ago

They still have to file income taxes. But, most places have higher taxes than the USA. Most places also have reciprocal tax agreements with the US. There's also a deduction of something like $100k, so the first $100k (or local equivalent) you earn in another country isn't taxed. As a result, unless you're making high six figures, you don't actually owe any American taxes.

OTOH, just filing US taxes is a real pain in the ass. In the US it's made very slightly easier by your employer, bank, etc. all supplying you with the tax forms you need. If you're overseas, you need to figure out the info you'd need to supply on that form yourself.

White = Expat

Anything else = Immigrant

It's really that simple

Too many Americans think "immigrant" is just a synonym for "not white".

[–] LadyAutumn@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

The people calling for these atrocities and committing them are white supremacists. What is happening is exactly what they want to happen.

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 20 points 3 months ago

native Americans

Even they are being snatched off streets and "detained".

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They’re arresting and detaining the actual native Americans too. Because they really want a Christo-fascist white state, not a native one.

That’s why they want to import the racists from South Africa.

Not to mention that ICE is frequently abducting Native Americans because they're brown

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 months ago

Most Americans realize this, but our government doesn't give a shit what we think right now. Trump and the GOP are not representing us.

Look at Greenland. 75% of Americans oppose what Trump is doing with that topic. That's disgustingly low, too... But still, he does it anyway.

This isn't new. Most Americans have no agency. We're just a few notches above slave labor at this phase. All we can do is vote, but the wealthy are influencing those votes all over the country with money and propaganda.

For every sane person speaking out, there's two to three others that have given up on everything. They'll just watch the news and do what it says.

[–] stelelor@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 months ago

This is the 21st century version of Manifest Destiny. Their immigrant status doesn't matter because they're white and therefore superior.

[–] MrSmith@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

Do the Americans not realise that..

No.

Carrying your documents around seems like a great way to have them stolen from you during your 'arrest'. You'd be lucky to see them again.

[–] Itdidnttrickledown@lemmy.world 73 points 3 months ago

Most of them can't read or function at a adult level. They get paid by the kidnapping so they don't care enough to look for proof.

[–] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 69 points 3 months ago

You NEED to Comply with These Unknown Heavily Armed Men otherwise they have EVERY LEGAL RIGHT to KILL YOU!

-People who Complained about Rights during Covid!

[–] homes@piefed.world 60 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Because they don’t give a shit whether you’re you’re a US citizen or not. They just want to hurt brown people.

Another U.S. citizen: 22-year-old Dulce Consuelo Diaz Morales was in custody for 25 days and transported to facilities in Louisiana, Texas, and New Jersey. In one detention center, she told WJZ Investigates she slept on the floor.

Her legal team provided documents, including her Maryland birth certificate and immunization records, along with other records they said they verified through an expert at Johns Hopkins University, but the Trump Administration is not backing down.

she now must wear an ankle monitor.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 46 points 3 months ago

They have arrest quotas, not identification quotas. They don't care.

[–] LadyAutumn@lemmy.blahaj.zone 40 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I dont know why they even mention the bit about criminal history. It would be no less heinous if she did have a criminal record.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 32 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It's because the justification that the Administration keeps giving is that they are getting "criminals" off the streets. So it's worth in these articles when ICE picks up citizens who have no criminal record. It directly illustrates how they lie.

[–] LadyAutumn@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I just wish we would stop letting fascist dictate the language thats used. We should stop playing into the performance of what they're doing. Don't afford it ant legitimacy. There's no contradiction in their behavior, because nothing they say is real. What is real is their hatred for minorities. What is real is their fascist takeover of the country. And the mass targeting of racialized minorities.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 10 points 3 months ago (2 children)

The problem is that, as US government officials, their words matter. Their official statements are newsworthy, even if they are lies. The media can't really ignore what they say. They can, however, illustrate when they are lying, even if this Administration throws a hissy-fit over it.

Lol omg. Imagine living in a country where you have to carry citizen paperwork around or get fucked over because you're a different colour. What a shithole.

[–] destructdisc@lemmy.world 15 points 3 months ago

no no, that or should be an "and" -- having paperwork doesn't save you from getting fucked over

Welcome back to Nazi Germany, because that's what the country that used to be the Land of the Free is turning into.

What paper work? The birth certificates from the 80s here are like a sliver of construction paper. No one is going to believe that is real.

There are plenty of illegal Caucasians from eastern Europe. Basically untouched by the US version of the SS and NKVD.

2 days detention for a Kavanaugh stop, huh? I think we should add up all the time citizens have spent detained because of blatant racism like this and then the man himself can sit in a shit hole jail for that length of time until he stops being too white to consider that other humans deserve better. I insist all his food contain spice levels not safe for white people to consume.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 23 points 3 months ago (1 children)

when ICE decides you look like an immigrant.

Not surprising they have all sorts of Aryanisms as they seek to carve out a white ethnostate.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 18 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Not only that, but they have an app that is supposed to help them figure out your status using facial recognition. They are admitting that they only harass people who their app thinks looks un-American. And they believe their app even if you have valid documents that say otherwise.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 19 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Betcha they have it programmed to recognize racial-specific features, something the Nazis built up to ID who is "Aryan", including purported facial bone structure.

"Carry your social security card!"

Why, so they can just rip it in half and call it fake documents? Pass. Just fuckin illegally arrest me and let's get it over with.

What’s worse is that ICE is just a bunch of untrained hicks with a badge

[–] BigTuffAl@lemmy.zip 15 points 3 months ago

You can't negotiate with terrorists. They aren't there for a legitimate purpose. ICE is a Run-Hide-Fight encounter.

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 11 points 3 months ago (3 children)

i wonder when perceived immigrants are forced to wear somekind of mark on them, maybe a star.

Lol nevermind, we have a whole rl documentation with Germany on what leads to what and still people think it will be different for them.

That's why I am convinced the US will go through terrible times until it can get better.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 months ago (7 children)

There is no incentive to comply. They want violence. Give them violence. They are going to kill you either way.

Well there is one uniquely American form of ID that guarantees protection from ICE...
