I am an American but I have family still living in Canada and go often. I think any way Canada can branch out to the external world and away from the United States is a win right now. I am deeply worried that if Trump succeeds in getting Greenland he will come after Canada. These dictators think they own everything. You all need to protect yourselves and your culture. You can be judgmental towards China for their history and how they treat people (they have colonized as well) and also use these partnerships to strengthen your country. I do hope Canada becomes more and more independent because it has the potential to be a serious world power as the United States crumbles. Once the court systems collapse here soon the likelihood of a civil war is insanely high.

But, can we leave?
Welcome to Hotel ~~California~~ China, where you can check out but never leave.
We haven't had any protests here since 1989!
Is your name Michael?
I’m not sure how I feel about this.
I do think China is a beautiful county that has a lot to offer, but the abduction and torture of the Micheals can’t be forgotten.
I was in China in 2011, at the height of their "Golden Age". It really is an amazing place culturally. And the natural parts that are maintained are beautiful.
But I don't think I'll ever go back, the political climate is way too sketchy and I don't see it getting better any time soon.
Or any of the other horrible things they’ve done. Then again, the most Canadian thing I can possibly think of is leaving a bad situation for one that’s quite possibly even worse but that you haven’t thought of in slightly more time.
A man looks at three cups. One is full of sewer muck, one of poison, and one of water. After sucking on the sewer muck for a bit he claims he wants a change and chugs the poison because the water just isn’t exciting enough. I can’t tell you what was in the muck or what kind of poison he drank but I’d bet my life on him having been Canadian.
Yeah. that’s accurate.
It describes our politics, insurance, phones, internet, banks, and basically the rip off our stock market.
I think it comes from being a colony, where you just had to put up with whatever the motherland wanted to exploit you for — for enough generations that it’s just the way things are and nobody really pushed back.
And I think this has actually gotten much much worse, as nobody starts businesses or invests in this country. “Why would I invest in you, there’s a multinational company to siphon off our cash right there!”
Yea maybe, but at this point I don’t like to accept that too readily. None of us alive were there when we actually had to just listen to what Britain was telling us, and there’s still no reason we can’t change for the better today.
And there are good Canadian companies, sometimes we don’t notice it but it’s still true. I remember thinking “ah fuck I have to buy from the US” trying to get a Graphtech bass guitar nut only to learn that the name brand product for that stuff is actually Canadian.
We’re just a bunch of defeatists, for no reason, and I’m getting tired of it. We give up without even the slightest fight and then tell ourselves that that’s just how it goes despite being in full control the entire time.
This is probably a fuck you to trump for his "annex Canada" comments.
This iteration of China doesn't like anything that messes with stability, but I doubt Xi was so offended on our behalf he feels the need to come to the rescue.
My best theory is that it's a way to win over Canada without putting anything economic or political on the line.
Edit: Authoritarian places usually love visas for everything, but not China apparently. NZ, Australia and several continental European countries are visa-free already. So, this is just moving us out of the "actively antagonistic" tier.
I think it's more about the trump tariffs really.
US says Canada will regret decision to allow Chinese EVs into their market
Weirdly enough, the man in charge seems find with it. Sometimes crazy cuts your way too.
The orange diaper monkey was going to screw us over regardless.
It's a trap!
Yeah nah, I’m good I think.
