Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Europeans get so angry when you refer to Russia (or Turkiye) as being "european" or "in europe". It's so funny.

like, even a list of "the biggest cities in europe" that includes Moscow, or a map infographic about europe that has russia or turkey colored in instead of being left in grey, will have germans in the comments going RUSSIA IS NOT EUROPE angery

The crazy European chauvinism that just went by without a single thought is truly something to behold.

What I'm hearing here is "Russia please help us keep Greenland"

[–] quarrk@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago

Politically it seems like a smart move if Russia did help in that regard, even if just to deepen the NAFO rift

His mistake was insisting that socialism would be exactly like the liberal capitalism that he lived in.

I hope Russia tells them to fuck off, I assume Europe would just use Russian oil to remilitarize and go back to threatening Russia again, anyways.

God, I wish, but Russia is always begging to be considered Europe and white, ever since Peter the Great (except maybe during Lenin's time), and it's not much better since they've become neoliberal. I think that was one of the causes of the fall of the USSR.

Russia will not ell them to fuck off. If the Europeans are willing to show sincerity, then Russia will accept cooperation with the Europeans and pull them away from the US. That's how capitalist geopolitics play out, on the basis of benefits. Not only that, but who wants to fight a protracted struggle? At some point, unless Russia annexes Europe, both sides will need to make some concessions to one another.

I assume Europe would just use Russian oil to remilitarize and go back to threatening Russia again, anyways

That ship has sailed. Russian oil supplies have been greatly rerouted to China and India while the EU has made itself dependant on the US for oil supplies. If the EU makes itself dependant on Russian oil supplies, not only will it have to pay a steep price, it will become easier to control and will shift away from the US.

If Russia or anyone here believes this is anything but politicking in an area that's going to go AFD and cause his coalition to falter in the next elections I present you the: fell-for-it-again-award

They'll consider Russia European if it submits to NATO, prostrates itself before them, gives up in Ukraine, admits it was bad and then pays money to help defend them against the US. That's the kind of "deal" these "garden" EU liberals are going to offer Russia and they'll be shocked if Russia doesn't take it.

[–] ComradeLeonie@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

I think that’s a wrong analysis. The AfD is not uniformly pro Russia. Its position on Russia is strongly split between the west and east sections. We have seen for over a year now, but especially within the last months, that the AfD is heavily struggling with that conflict, because that’s one of the main things keeping them from being ready for the Parlament. And we have seen those fights for power not only within the AfD, but also from the outside trying to influence the AfD. Thinking that Merz saying this is just Ment to grab some votes from the AfD, is quite a shallow analysis in my opinion.

Now this doesn’t mean Germany is suddenly becoming pro Russia. Ofcourse not. But it’s really interesting to see, that after speaking for years now about russia as a rogue terror state where all people are crazy, Merz is saying this now. In my opinion this does at least show that the German capital is rethinking its approach to world power and wants to keep another option open, in case the current strategy of being by the US side doesn’t work anymore.
