What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether it be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users, as it handwaves their extremism.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in arguments that lack mutual agreement.

Brigading — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from voting, commenting, or manipulating the post in any way. This includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be banned.

Tankies can explain their views, but may be criticised or challenged for them. Any minor infraction of the rules may result in a warning and possibly a temporary ban.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically last only 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction doubles the duration. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

The same people who call Russias invasion of Ukraine a “power move for socialism”.

My question is: Are you really surprised?

[–] FunkyStuff@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago

When did they say that?

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

They really do love the boot, don't they?

They're driving tanks through the same square where they massacred protestors. That's the point, that's the core part of why Tank Man is so influential, it's because a single unknown man stopped the show of authoritarian force.

[–] FunkyStuff@sh.itjust.works -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You were acknowledging in the other posts you made off of these 2 threads that no one was actually massacred in the square. You know that. So why say that these tanks had just got done massacring protestors? You could pull attention to the part of the anti-China narrative that is true, that the same government to whom the tanks belong had been killing hundreds of protesters in the streets of Beijing at the same time.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

There wasn't a massacre in the square itself in the sense of tanks running people into pulp, which again happened elsewhere. (it's NEAR the square, guys! totally different!) But there was death, and soldiers and police shooting at protestors and making an excessive and oppressive display of force.

Allow me to specify, when I refer to 'they' -- I refer to the government.

They’re driving tanks through the same square where they massacred protestors.

Means they are showing their force by driving military vehicles through the square where they previously massacred protestors. Massacre in the sense that a lot of protestors were killed.

I think this is a telling bingo square of how tankies operate. They know that Tiananmen Square was wrong, they know that student protestors were senselessly murdered and killed with military force -- BUT! They can argue that the location was elsewhere! That 9 people died instead of 10!

Is there actual evidence he was murdered? I mean I assume that's what happened but I'm just curious what's actually known about his fate if anything.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nah, there's no evidence he was murdered. There's very little evidence about Tank Man's identity or what happened to him.

There are many theories as to who he was and what happened to him, but there's no evidence for any of them. Curiously, the CCP say that they don't have any records of the man, but it was also before the digital surveillance state that China is today.

I think it's fair to say that he was arrested, I mean, he interfered with the Chinese military after they slaughtered students. They're not going to let him walk free.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well, only if they were able to identify him. It's possible he escaped.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago

Maybe!

No one really knows

[–] FunkyStuff@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I also assume everyone I see in a video of protests in the US eventually is murdered.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

With how things are currently it wouldn't surprise me

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

Fair though.
