I doubt many people have given it much thought, or just assumed the Michelin Guide had some sort of reasonable business model that lets the guide itself stand on its own merits. But apparently their actual business model is extorting local governments.

OK, so there's no Michelin Guide in Australia.
Does anyone know what the best independent and ethical guide for top Aussie restaurants is?
To be honest, Google reviews have always been pretty accurate for me. It's not "Australia wide", but you're probably not flying Sydney-Perth just to eat a burger.
Don't forget that is the same Michelin that makes tyres.
The guide was a tool to encourage Americans to drive more and increase tyre wear.
So, of fucking course it's a gift.
The French, not Americans. The guide was first published in France, in 1900. The first American guide was published in 2005, and covered only New York City.
I think it would also be hard to argue that Michelin felt the need to encourage Americans to drive in the year 2005.
