oh i guess you don’t see iranistanians as real people with agency. btw africa isn’t poor because the us and europe hyperexploit them. thats racist to say. its because they don’t know how to run their countries. or are you a racist who thinks africans also have no agency???

Ah yes, the liberal 'agency' turnabout, that somehow also denies that the U.S. routinely hampers the agency of these people through sanctions.

It was this kind of stuff that made me want to bash my fellow liberal arts students over the head with the textbook.

these sorts dont even see these people as human with valuable lives. they dont care that the outcome of the shit they espouse has created the conditions where the agency of these people isn’t even part of the discussion until it can be weaponized

Printing out all the declassified docs showing what that agency has done, putting them in a bunch of binders, putting those binders in a filing cabinet, then dropping it onto these people

Agency is when you toe the state department line

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 44 points 3 months ago

maddened "Those damn Tankies always seeking to deprive the 3rd world of agency! Specifically, the Central Intelligence one"

[–] KnilAdlez@hexbear.net 36 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Some CIA agent got a promotion for coming up with that line

I've seen people make this argument for years, basically just denying documented imperialist meddling but in a way that sounds woke to people whose ideology is based on vibes.

It's like the geopolitical version of using therapy-speak to obfuscate abuse and stuff.

If there is discontent in the United States, however, the conversation is not, When is China going to invade? Or, you know, We really hope Cuba starts amassing outside of Miami.

I-was-saying

Nice. Haven't seen this one yet, but that title sounds extremely relevant to this argument which has been brought up a lot lately.

Pretty sure Western paternalistic intervention in their nation's internal affairs is actually denying them agency

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 21 points 3 months ago

These same people defend what happens in Syria because of "agency" btw

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 20 points 3 months ago

I knew this was going to be the “denies agency” argument lmfao

If you think about it

If you REALLY think. I mean really JUST think about it. Close your eyes and imagine. What sounds reasonable to you? Doesn't it just SOUND unreasonable that this one thing does the thing? Shouldn't the truth be many things at once? Many things can be true at once, you know. Those people saying the thing is doing the thing just aren't using their heads.

This is like when xiaohongshu claimed that having a positive opinion of the Great Firewall means you are racist against Chinese people

I remember it clearly, I was at a low point at the time and became so pissed off that I blocked the account and have been seething about it ever since. Just now I spent an embarrassing amount of time searching for keywords with the username before realizing that no matter what I'm not going to get results because of the block. So I had to log out and try to check and I don't see it yet, but I remember it. Before I consider whether to delete this I want to know if anyone else remembers it.

I mean, I can definitely see why he'd find some defenses of it to be really condescending, but I just struggle to imagine him arguing against how it is very beneficial to China to have its own social media, etc. for both developmental and especially national security purposes.

Funny how the "you just say everything is the CIA" and "you just call everybody nazis" crowd always seems to land on the side of "nothing is the CIA" and "Nobody is nazis"

Meanwhile every single Venezuelan not singing cheers for the invasion is "a Maduro supporter" (ideology unknown, probably brainwashed)

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 months ago

Ignore the evidence because its inconvenient.

Stop denying the agency of JFK's head.

iranistanians

I just learned about Call of Duty's "Urzikstan," as their stand-in for scary islamic country. I knew CoD has real guns and equipment, to the point where they license the names. But they cant use real country names (except the US and Russia) because they don't want to risk actually teaching gamers anything about history or culture.

[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago

yeah no actual country they could use bc there's a real world example of the US fucking any country up basically
