Hey gang. So first half a day in Japan didnโ€™t go amazingly well but there were some good moments. I had an overnight flight to China and then a connecting flight to Japan, and I had really sore knees and couldnโ€™t get comfortable. Transiting through China felt like a fever dream. Got here, went on train. The real scramble shouldnโ€™t be Shibuya Scramble but Shinjuku Station, because itโ€™s jam-packed. I then met up with friend who carried my luggage for me, and her friend who tagged along bought us yakiniku which was nice. Hostel is cool, but the shower rooms were a bit gross and there was nowhere to put my clothes and toiletries. I didnโ€™t really get to do what I had planned to do today, but thatโ€™s the fun of it I guess. Hopefully Iโ€™ll get some good rest tonight and that the konbinis live up to the hype.

Glad you are there ok. First day never goes to plan for me. If you are there and get a rest that's a win!

Agreed , the day you land doesn't count it's just part of travel

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 3 months ago

the first day is getting your bearings and making sure you have your stuff and are where you're supposed to be, also looking around while you do your stuff and seeing if anything catches your eye that you can visit later

We're regulars at a Vietnamese restaurant in Footscray. Been going there for years.

Waitress asked us for a photo today as they have a wall out back of customers who get special discounts and freebies.

They're so sweet.

I survived the night shift and got some good sleeping in today, ready to go again tonight ๐Ÿ™‚

It's amazing to see the amount of effort put in by volunteers all over the state (and from interstate) in harrowing and dangerous conditions. Thousands of people out there willing to put their lives on hold to undertake some of the most arduous work possible, and to keep going back again. Even with the worst of the weather past us there is going to be a lot of work ongoing to bring the fires under control.

Ugh. A marketplace scam I didnโ€™t anticipate: Buyer collects, but then later claims some issue/ reason for a refund while they re-list and on-sell the item. They hope to cash in on getting the refund as well as selling the item.

Iโ€™ve reported them. But itโ€™s still very concerning that they have made physical threats. Bloody lowlife.

Bickford's Pink Lemonade is good shit, lemony strawberry refreshment with soda water.

I want them to bring back red orange sorbet. It was the best one!

[โ€“] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 7 points 3 months ago

Heard some rain last night, I hope the rest of the state gets some as well.

Bubs was so exhausted from yesterday that she slept through the night. She got up for water but mostly just cuddled.

omg, the smoke outside/beach is so bad I just about had an asthma attack and came back asap

the streets here are now hazy and the sky is yellow

[โ€“] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

There's a couple of fires round Altona meadows and point Cook. I opened my window for so fresh air and immediately had to shut it again. Now the air purifier is going OFF!

[โ€“] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 3 points 3 months ago

Thanks. I couldn't see a specific source of smoke, just general haze of smoke, but definitely from that direction

[โ€“] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I just went out for a walk and the smoke smell is strong. The air is foggy with it and the afternoon sun looks more orange than usual

I had to shower and change because my hair and clothes smelled of smoke

Funnily, Tribute started playing from my playlist the other day and I've had that stuck in my head since.

Fuck Her Gently is still my fav song of theirs tho

Copped an infection from yesterday's stuff. Antibiotics have kicked in finally.

Been practising a song for about 5 weeks and finally got it down. Here's a phone recording if anyone's interested

I slept for over 12 hours. I needed it, but I hate how my face gets really puffy when I oversleep.

Some debt place has been texting me for months to pay for 2 COVID tests I needed to pay for back in April. They just sent me their final notice so I'm thinking I still don't pay and see what happens. They haven't done anything but text, and there has been no threat of further escalation.

Part of it is because the tests were done in the name of my 3 year old son. Could it impact him 15 years later if he defaulted on a debt when he was a child?

I have been listening to the audio book of the ABC of Relativity by Russell until the principles and laws get into my head and I start to imagine the world and my place in it differently.

One thing is it makes me feel so very very tiny in a very very large universe, when Jupiter and Saturn are considered very small then I am what?

[โ€“] StudChud@aussie.zone 4 points 3 months ago

Too Many Zooz and Bloc Party are a great combo. Highly recommend! 10/10!

Kind of considering trying to find the recipe for those Italian lemon cookies I made in home ec decades ago. But they were a traditional recipe that used lardโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know if shops still sell lard. Or if they would sit well with me.

Plus Iโ€™d have to shop. And clean the kitchen before and after.

I am bored out of my mind but physically feel like I got hit by a bus

[โ€“] RustyRaven@aussie.zone 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You can definitely still buy lard.

Cookies are the sort of thing you can make a bit at a time, you don't have to do everything in one go. So you could write an ingredients list for when you have the energy to shop next, then when you have the ingredients you can measure out an ingredient or two at a time when you have the energy, then mix the dough and put it in the fridge until you have the energy to shape it etc.

[โ€“] TheWitchofThornbury2@aussie.zone 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

might have been these ones????

No lard. Dough is very forgiving as long as you use 00 (cake) flour NOT bread flour.

[โ€“] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (3 children)

Maybe? I seem to remember a thin lemon icing glaze that dried hard and glossy, and they may or may not have been shaped as knots. It was a long time ago.

But I do remember they absolutely used lard, I remember the thick white fat and faint smell. I could use butter but dairy.

I donโ€™t have either 00 or bread flour, anything I make is generic general purpose flour. Itโ€™s not great but reasons of budget and waste (can use it for multiple things)

[โ€“] TheWitchofThornbury2@aussie.zone 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

General purpose would do, but the bikkies would be a bit crisper and not as melting tender.
