This feels like an onion headline

I was waiting for the plot twist, that Venezuelans were also hopeful that the Trump regime would collapse.

No, I think it had the opposite effect of what he was trying to achieve

The liberal conception of power nears a magical understanding of reality. It's understood as if there was the sacred artifact that one can steal and keep for themselves, becoming Dictator of the country. It's so deeply ingrained that even top US leadership acted like Maduro would just drop the Stone of Power upon capture so they could give it to anyone they wanted to.

That's what overconfidence does to you.

Seriously, I still don't get why the heck the media were so overly confident that the US had taken over Venezuela despite the fact they don't occupy so much as a square meter of Venezuelan territory, what's up with that?

the US had taken over

I think it’s more important to stress this was an attempted invasion, not just a kidnapping of a guy. They snatched the head of state of a sovereign nation, no ifs and buts about what they are trying to do.

It's almost like being a dog of empire basically never pays off!
