Growing up I had a dog I adored. He enjoyed wearing trench coats and hats. He even liked to take a bite out of crime. However just his proximity to that life, made him succumb to his demons.

K9 handler and K9 handler trainer here - K9 handlers are WILDLY different between agencies, even in the same region.
Good K9 handlers never let their dogs get in contact with the drugs. I'm sure there's plenty of bad handlers that let their dogs accidentally make contact.
I'm sure there are plenty of dogs that OD or have problems, but there's no way a dog would be able to self-administer enough to become "addicted".
You're so right. I mean...I used to work with people who were K9 handlers and anyone who even brought his dog in a situation that would allow direct contact would be scrutinised. Repeatly? You are no longer a K9 handler and probably no longer a officer.K9 training is expensive and a handler who let's that happen would not be in control obviously. But training here is done on a state level (we have no local law enforcement in my neck of the woods), regulated on a national/federal level and passive signaling is preferred these days anyway.
So... As you said... Even a dog getting an OD would be so crazy here it would probably make national news if the media got wind of it.

The drug sniffing dogs smelling drugs is not the same as the dogs doing drugs.

Bomb sniffing dogs don't become explosive after a few successful shifts, for similar reasons.
