Do you mind sharing the wallpaper and dot files?

Thank you so much

how are you managing the dot files?

[–] despaircode@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

How you apply them? What desktop environment or window manager are you using?

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

it changes at least once per year and i used to do it with code versioning; but now i've just learned how to be happy with the basic settings that are common on most distros. i've used Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat & Oracle professionally and Fedora & Ubuntu personally.

i asked you this because the other time i asked this on lemmy it i learned something new about how it can be done and i'm hoping to strike gold twice.

Ah, thanks for clarifying! I self-host Gitea on a rpi and just push my dots to it.

You’re not sure?

I'm planning to install Slackel in a few weeks' time. Does that count?

[–] despaircode@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Of course! All Slackers unite!

What is Slackware mostly used for. Been a Linux geek for ages and never got around to that one for whatever reason.

It's a general purpose distro. Its niche is for users that want even more focus on KISS than Arch and even more stability than Debian. Or tinkerers who want "Linux from Scratch, but with updates".

Manually resolving dependencies, piping fortune through cowsay and playing Tux Racer for the most part… /s

I run Slackware on my gaming pc too. You can use it as a daily driver like any other distro. It doesn’t have a specific use case. It is what you want it to be.

I'm not entirely familiar with Slackware, do you have to run -current or else you get YEARS old programs?

[–] mech@feddit.org 2 points 3 months ago

Partially. You do get security updates, and you do get newer versions for programs where backporting isn't feasible (like Firefox, Thunderbird, etc).
That's just the narrow niche Slackware lives in - more KISS than Arch and more stable than Debian.
You can also add Flatpak, of course. And it's easier than on any other distro to install different software versions yourself, since the package manager doesn't stand in your way.
