My family has been duped by faith healers, and even though they have different political beliefs than me, it's been horrifying to watch them slowly kill themselves from something completely preventable.

It has instilled distrust and refusal of modern medicine into them, so my da (who suffered a massive heart attack years ago) has been arguing with his doctor and only takes asprin now.

My dear mother (considered uneducated and "only a mother and wife" by my da) suffered a stroke within the last few years, and LUCKILY has realized that she has too much shit to care for to take the risk.

The worst was recently.. my aunt went to the hospital last month where they told her she should have her gallbladder removed. She refused. And is still refusing. She is going to a """holistic Christian nutritionist""" who sells his time & some supplements. We are all just waiting for that phone call.

You wanna see some fucked up shit? Check out the "Be In Health" ministry, that led my family to this. https://www.beinhealth.com/for-my-life/

Also led to my mental and emotional abuse when I couldn't shake my "sin" enough to be "normal". I am still suffering from the trauma as an adult. Hint: I'm neurodivergent.

Becoming A Faith Healer

Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Grift

If you think you're going to be the winners in the Ponzi games, you are the people you think you'll be fleecing.

I.. I would watch that movie.

[–] Chakravanti@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago

Especially if Kubrik had made that one too.

[–] moistclump@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I’d initially read that as “How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Love and Grift.”

He is still scamming people because he knows they are more susceptible to such scams. His wife is right.

From an utilitarian perspective, and looking at the big picture, it's still better for society if they lose their money to a con artist that just wants to get rich than if they give it to a con artist that wants to crown himself as king of an absolute monarchy.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

But he also reinforces them and develops a large financial incentive to support such wannabe monarchs

But you are assuming all your victims would have used that money which is definitely not the case. How would you make sure only "guilty" people buy your scam.

[–] vivadanang@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

or.. the money they spend would instead go to trump 2024 and the purchase of more firearms and ammo.....

[–] lauha@lemmy.one 1 points 2 years ago

Yes, but presumption of innocense is also a fundamental human right and your scam would would also include innocent victims as collateral. You know this is on very weak foot ethically.

[–] paddirn@lemmy.world 16 points 2 years ago

It’s ethical to scam MAGA folks. Otherwise they’d inevitably just be sending that money to Trump or some other con artist or grifter. Scam them before it makes its way to the criminals, then donate the money to charity.

If leftists ever decided to give up on morality, it's the end of all right-wing or conservative organizations and institutions. Infiltration and disinformation would be as easy telling a small child stories about Santa Claus.

[–] confusedbytheBasics@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The problem is it only works with the lies they want to believe.

[–] Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 years ago

The funny thing is a lot of "trump voters" should be voting for the left. There are many low income people who would be helped with social securities and they are often distrustful of big corporations... They would be good lefties if you could sell it to them. I think the topic that they want to believe are present and very aligned to left wing ideals.

We would have storm the capital in 4 hrs instead of in 4 years

[–] andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 years ago

It needs a progressive taxation and a credit score system. Can't sell your pants, but is obligated to take a loan from Saudis to promote yourself into a rank of the Shadow Dark Seer if you are able to.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

would this be a good place to let you know, I am selling thoughts and prayers, five bucks a pop?

They're the best thoughts and prayers.

[–] doingthestuff@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Christians in the US are almost split evenly politically. Something like 46/44/10 last I saw.

[–] veganpizza69@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Don't worry, there's grifting method for each.
