Serious question: why wouldn’t Greenland close the consulate and expel diplomats based on the threats to sovereignty?

Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

sometimes ppl think it's not worth stirring up more overt trouble, and just try to ride out the madness until the next admin while silently doing what you can to protect your own interests.
S america did, when US diplomats tried to incite a coup, GREENLAND SHOULD.
Absolutely. The only wild card is the US military base in Greenland. Revoke all permissions for US soldiers to leave the base. Make it an offence for them to be outside the perimeter. If they are caught, arrest them, and deport them. Then work on dismantling the base
"We pay for your interns and don't even mention it" is such a nice burn though. Not that any member of the current US admin will get it, but the rest of the world does.
The rest of the world gets what?
That Greenland is paying for the Americans to come and try and annex their land.....I don't think the current admin cares. They like that set up.
Will any other country pay for trump to send people in to destabilize their homeland? I'm sure he would like to know more.
It's implying that the interns will work for free but that they will be paid by adversaries to the US to gather Intel.
Exhibit 1: Venezuela.
He IS going to avoid elections by being at war, isn't he?
I know it’s bleak but that isn’t how it works
The states get to conduct their own elections and we’ve always had elections during war anyway
Federalism is one of the few really good ideas the founders had for dealing with this exact problem: a tyrannical federal government
Yes, but lets not pretend laws and precedence mean much any more.
I know, and they are disregarding laws I don’t mean to imply otherwise, and this is a perverse point to make but
We’ve had elections during every war so far so I think the best they can do is attempt to hack them and cheat in more conventional ways
Yeah, it really seems like they stole the last election with shady vote machines after implying that the Dems did it in 2000.
Everything they attack is a clue, from "rigged elections" to "anti fascism".
Except the red states are going to do what he says and the blue states are going to be invaded by national Guardsmen from the red States.
the USA has such passage? That's stupid but would explain why he wants to wage war with Venezuela.
No. But regulations and laws are meaningless with a complicit Congress.
Don't forget that the Supreme Court is in his pocket as well!
No, the US has had elections during war before. Hell, it had an election during world war 2. But Trump has the backing of the media, lawmakers, and the Supreme Court. So he could certainly try, and every other group who is supposed to step in and stop him would probably let him instead.
Not avoid them but using successful military operations to boost your popularly is an old strategy and using unsuccessful military operations to argue against "rocking the boat" was George W Bush's strategy.
"The US Consulate in Greenland reopened in June 2020 during Trump’s first term. In 2025, shortly after Trump was re-appointed president, the consulate moved to larger, 3,000 square meter offices in central Nuuk, equipped with armoured glass."
Ah yes, the actions of someone who is confident they will be welcomed with open arms.
Real life is stranger than fiction man. I've never seen anything this crazy in any dystopian novels I've read.
Worst bit about it? There was a world telling US voters for at least 15 years this was where they were headed. We knew if they gave Trump control again, this would happen. The only thing stopping him the first time was he didn’t have the people in the right places. Now he does.
That's without their imperial ambitions.
So they went ahead and did it twice. Of course.
Dude, the world has been quite done with the US since before 2016. It's now just hit parody levels of ridiculous.
3 times if you count both his first term and 2020.
looking for unpaid interns to service its communication channels, leaving local authorities to foot the bill of financially supporting applicants while the US steps up annexation threats.
I'm over here, laughing in OpSec
They say you pay your auxiliaries in patriotism. That and two pennies will buy them a beer.
And ~~Mexico~~ Greenland will pay for it!
If I were Greenlanders, I'd be stock piling high powered rifles and ammunition. If I were Denmark, I'd be shipping Manpads to Greenland in bulk.
Being cheap nah be the only reason evil won't ultimately succeed.
The hypocrisy in a nutshell.
Also
service its communication channels
We all know what that means for MAGA.
So he wants fanatics who don't need money to go to Greenland? Sounds like zealots to me.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
