My Vietnam history is pretty weak but i remember north Vietnam surrendered to the US. And only captured south Vietnam years after American support was withdrawn. The. North also suffered heavy casualties.

I'm interested to know what I'm missing because i always hear that the US lost Vietnam but i dont understand why its viewed that way.

You were taught North Vietnam surrendered? Wow, that is some completely fabricated propaganda you were taught, I am so sorry you were let down like that.

The war ended with the Fall of Saigon when the North captured the South's capital and the US retreated.

tbf, a lot of the Viet Cong were younger fellows who wouldn't have been WW2 vets.

But yeah, the Viet Cong were a serious org, not just a bunch of randos. Really fascinating organizational technologies they used to minimize material shortages, the sort of things an institution learns by... well, having veterans of some ~30 years of irregular warfare against occupation by several world powers.
