General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

The Fabian Society, for whom socialism is essentially the Kingdom of Heaven: you won’t reach it, neither will your grandchildren, nor their grandchildren, but it may happen at some point in the distant future of humanity, so hold onto the idea to make the status quo more bearable. The best we can do is tiny, incremental reforms. It’s Burkean Conservatism in a red rosette.

Catastrophic climate collapse will wipe us all out long before any inkling of a just society can come to fruition.

Still going to vote Green (unless Sultana somehow massively steps up her game), but I'm not foolish enough to believe in shit getting much better before arable land and potable water runs out and all the oxygen producing phytoplankton in the oceans dissolve.

If you want a fun start to your new year, look up some of those things. Most will have long since happened by 2050 by current predictions.

Are the Guardian now just public relations for corporate Labour?

No one talks about Fabians or cares what they think outside Labour...

He adds: “The idea that squeezing a tiny elite of billionaires will pay for everything that we want and everything that we need is fantasy and we do need to expose that.”

The fact that we have a society with billionaires while millions are living in poverty means simply that the policies of the last 50+ years have failed our society.

Anyone defending billionaires is part of the problem and not looking for real solutions

Yes. He seems to forget that "officially" the top 10% hold around 43-45% of all wealth, while the bottom 50% hold only about 9-10% of total wealth in the UK. And that doesn't account for all the wealth they have hidden away offshore etc.

There is a LOT that can be squeezed out of a not-so-tiny elite. Or, to be better phrased, redistributed justly.

billionaires

*multi millionaires

Nobody needs to earn more than above £1m and there should be 90% tax above this figure (irrespectively if the earnings are from work or capital gains etc).

Guy must be worshiping Margaret Thatcher’s neoliberalism.

The head of the Fabian Society ?

I agree with this chap from the Fabian society, not only do we need to tab billionaires more, we need additional measures. These could be things like an exit tax, closing loopholes on inheritance tax, etc. That said, at least the Greens are addressing the growing inequality in this country, what does this think tank say on that?!

Here we go with the centrist nonsense that started this mess in the first place.
