Russian channels are reporting that large portions of Moscow are currently without power, amidst a large-scale drone attack currently underway against the Russian capital by Ukraine,’ the account posted this evening.

Sharing images of the reported blackouts, Volodymyr Zelensky’s former press secretary, Iuliia Mendel, said: β€˜Total blackout hits Moscow region is reported on social media: over 600,000 people plunged into darkness for more than four hours β€” no electricity, no mobile signal, total isolation.’

Make 'em feel it!

I wonder if their was also a sudden drop in pro-republican Twitter posts when the power went out.

I remember seeing this graph about posts on r/conservative and how two power "users" responsible for 30%+ of all posts both coincidentally were offline during another power outage in Moscow two months ago.

Maybe they learned from their mistake by now.

It coincided with a major holiday in the US, and the blackout was for a relatively tiny section of Moscow. I would be shocked if there were similar dips in posts other times power went out in that part of Moscow.

Hell we can test it right now, is there a much bigger drop in posts today than there was last NYE?

That's not to say conservative isnt astroturfed to hell, but the notion that its all Russians in Moscow is silly.

For that you'll gave to knockout the AI servers, which are probably redondant across multiple region.

"There is no blackout, disregard such propaganda" - Russian media, probably, to people in the dark.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 31 points 4 days ago (2 children)

The people in the dark can't turn on the TV to hear it.

"the power not off, it just closing eyes for minute"

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

Bet you they still broadcast it nonetheless. Sitting in front of cameras in the dark, no camera has a red light turned on, reading from a black teleprompter.

"No blackout. Actually whiteout. Power surge in cables. Please turn more device and appliance on for consume all excess power."

I hope it stays out for the entirety of New Year's Eve, Russia's biggest holiday of the year, when the biggest event is to watch a bunch of variety shows on state TV until Putin comes on at midnight and tells the plebes to be afraid of the West and go die in the trenches.

[–] Sunshine@piefed.ca 20 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Make sure Putin can’t eat anything hot in his mansion.

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Oh he can, but the plebs around him can't.

does putin even eat, his face is so frozen from "alleged botox" and swollen from corticosteroids.

More than 4 hours?

We had a storm in northern Europe/Scandinavia a few days ago that put tens of thousands of people without power for more than a day. Thousands are still without power even now, four days later, in the dead of winter.

Four hours is a minor inconvenience for a people used to the cold and darkness of winter. It's barely enough time to pass between two meals, lol. Barely enough time for the stuff in your freezer to start changing temperature.

Come on, hit 'em harder! πŸ’₯

I think the point is to make it difficult for Putin to lie to his people and tell them that the war is going well. It's hard to cover up an actual blackout.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

That is a very good outcome indeed! πŸ‘Œ

Something tells me repairing the grid isn't as easy as it used to be in Russia right now.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

I hope so. 🫒

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 17 points 4 days ago

More of this. They need to know that they are at war.

Something that surprised me about this war is that drones don't seem to be as effective as I thought they would be. Like I thought it would be fairly simple to do something like this on day one.

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Wars have a weird amount of holding back. Going after civilian infrastructure is often seen as "ungentlemanly", basically bad PR. Most Ukraine attacks like this seem to be to prove they can, not to cause significant civilian damage.

Basically, Russia has a number of nasty options, currently unused. Ukraine is also unusually dependent of foreign help, and so it is vulnerable to the world opinion changing. Ukraine is mostly proving its threats are viable.
