Generally, an artifact should be 100+ years old, but this is a flexible requirement if you find something rare and suitably linked to an era of history, not a strict rule. Anything over 100 is fair game regardless of rarity.

John T. Wilder commanded the Union's 'Lightning Brigade' - a mounted infantry brigade from the American Civil War in the Union Army of the Cumberland.
He was personally impressed by the advanced Spencer repeating rifles and when the government would not pay to arm his brigade with them, he paid out of pocket. Eventually the Army reversed its decision and reimbursed the cost.
