I have never liked PayPal and I am still forced to use them. Did you knew the longest password you can use us 20 characters?

(I'm located within the European Union) Anyhow, I want something more private, but still quite convenient to use and have something in between my bank details and the site I'm shopping on. Years some companies make virtual temporary cards.

I remember I tried getting privacy.com back in the day but couldn't as it was for Americans and Canadians at the time.

Suggestions? :P

What are you wanting to use it for? I use prepaid cards for most shopping online and just enter fake details if it's a digital purchase. But obviously that only works for buying things, not being paid

Wise is a option as well. They provide a virtual credit card so you can use it online, though you only get one virtual card at a time.

It does require ID and information as its close to being a bank

Theres this beautiful german word for it:

Lastschrift (Direct Bank transfer)

There are so few places that actually accept it. How could it be worthwhile?

Every neobank (and some traditional banks) allow you to generate proxy cards. Revolut (even though its global HQ isn't in the EU) allows you to do that. Same with N26 (German neobank).

Ah yes

Because they are more private... You know, the banks that dont let you use GrapheneOS.

Revolut works perfectly.

All my banking apps work on GOS. Flawlessly, well, except N26 which a bit unstable and crashes quite a lot. Nevertheless it works enough to be usable.

Just be aware that n26 was put under strict surveillance by Bafin (Federal Financial Supervisory Authority for Germany). I only have a German source though: https://www.golem.de/news/onlinebank-bafin-ordnet-aufpasser-fuer-n26-an-2512-203292.html

Monero is the absolute best privacy you're going to get for online payments, although it's not accepted in a lot of places.

And not traded against fiat in many places due to regulation

[–] wolfiedafloof@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I knew about this. I simply wanted something that already is accepted in most places, but also isn't PayPal but can still create virtual cards for payment. Even if they were to be leaked, no harm done because they're virtual and probably only had the exact amount of money it needed to complete a purchase (once). So it has 0 at the time of a leak or is probably removed.

If the place you want to spend at offers gift cards there's a 99% chance you can buy them with monero. You can also buy prepaid Visa/MasterCard debit cards but they'll only work at places that don't require 3D secure. Have a look at https://cakepay.com/

Many online banks and money services can do this. I have an account with one whose main purpose is transferring money to my home country to pay my student loans and for money while traveling, but they also offer these digital visa cards. Wouldn't consider it "private" in any serious way but it's probably less bad than paypal.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Its not better but you could just use your credit card every time instead. PayPal is easier but your card has likely has better theft insurance than PayPal.

I dont enjoy that evil Peter T and fElon founded PayPal. I should really stop using it.

Privacy.com is for Americans only.

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago

They ask for way too much personal info, IMO.

Yes. Every little bit helps.

wero could replace PayPal if they don't mess up... shops just need to adopt it next year.

Unless the digital Euro or GNU Taler really become the norm... You are totally stuck with multibillion corps controlling every single digital cent of yours.

I think revolut does what you described but I can't recommend them, I helped someone regain access to their Revolut account and it was an absolute nightmare, with no live reps to contact, spanning multiple months, and his face was photographed at all possible angles many times in the process.

[–] lorski@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

Good to know

[–] artyom@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Depends on what type of transaction you're talking about. A lot of sites accept PayPal exclusively. You can use your CC but it's processed by PayPal. You can use Stripe sometimes, although I'm not sure how much better they are. Use your CC directly if you can. Use crypto. Etc.

[–] M33@piefed.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Didn't paypal has password + MFA already ?

[–] rozodru@pie.andmc.ca 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

easily bypassed though. literally just refresh your browser a few times and it'll stop asking you for 2FA.

Really ? wow.... another wonderful exemple of "Security is our #Last priority".
