Normally, I'd welcome progress in nuclear regulation, but given how the US administration is cocking up things right now and how they handled Boeing's "oversight", this is a disaster in the making. You need more training, better security standards, more investment, but they are just going to invest more money and I fear it will be in the wrong places.

The Energy Department has taken control of testing advanced small reactors, bypassing traditional safety oversight
What could possibly go wrong?

RBMK-1000

Maybe it will become another HBO miniseries? I am a big fan of their take on Chernobyl.

The funny thing is, no matter how many corners they cut on safety, these things will never be economically viable. And even if they somehow got the technology to work, who is going to buy these things without proper certification? Even if they manage to sell a bunch to the AI bros, to make their data centers even more pernicious, without an export market, this will just be another gigantic money pit, where the taxpayer is left to pick up the tab.
