SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Chile’s ultra-conservative former lawmaker José Antonio Kast secured a stunning victory in the presidential election Sunday, defeating the candidate of the center-left governing coalition and setting the stage for the country’s most right-wing government in 35 years of democracy.

Add context: Under former dictator Augusto Pinochet’s regime (1973-1990) many were tortured ( ca. 10 K) and killed (ca. 3/4 K)

I love how every country is turning to right-wing populist ultranationalism. The world will be such a safe place when every single country has plans of invading all the others.

Rig easy elections. Easier than a coup.

It's like an arms race of political ideology, picking the nuclear option.

Maybe beacuse this new President Kast, is from a rich family. Or maybe because his father was a Wehrmacht officer and member of the NSDAP? Maybe beacuse Rubio was quick to congratulate him. Take your pick.

Add. Most newspapers call him " ultra right".

Probably because they seem to be globally thumbing the scales, and it's not the first time wealthy conservatives conspired to do so. Not even the first time in Chile

Because it's easier to see one scary boogie man we can blame than lots of little problems that add up, and that no one seems intent on solving.

I've no doubt that there are malicious foreign (or even domestic) actors of notable material wealth, but it's hardly the only cause for such things.

"Michael Martin Kast (German pronunciation: [ˈmɪçaʔeːl ˈmaʁtiːn kast]; 2 April 1924 – 9 May 2014) was a German-Chilean military officer and businessman, along with being the founder of the Kast family in Chile. He was a member of the Hitler Youth and later of the Nazi Party. After Nazi Germany's defeat following the end of World War II, he settled in Chile, where he collaborated with the Pinochet regime. Many of his descendants have had important roles in Chilean politics, including his son José Antonio Kast."

Wiki on his dad. The world is cooked and Western European civ. remains the main guilty party. 😔😭
