One of my best friends visited for over 10 days and when we had to take her to the airport my kid was like “I don’t want you to leave. Take me with you.” And then made the sweetest little pouty face. It was a bittersweet moment.

this is a work made in 2003 that says "train is going to station capitalism"

this is the actual artwork from 1939 that says "train going from station socialism to station communism"

Any tips for helping a kid first learn how to ride a bike after taking off training wheels? I think my oldest is ready but I’m not sure.

The kids have been watching Once Upon A Hamster recently. It’s a Canadian show from the 90s but we watch it on Amazon’s streaming service. It is just about the cutest, coziest show I’ve ever seen, highly recommend.

We started with a balance bike for our oldest. Balancing is the hardest part. You could probably simulatea balance bike by lowering the seat and taking the training wheels off. They push with their feet to get speed then when they feel confident they can balance they should put their feet on the pedals and just glide for as long as they can. Once that feels good they can add pedaling in.

Do they know how to pedal? And have they only ever been on bikes with training wheels before?

Putting the seat down low so they can push around with their feet should help. Then take them somewhere with a bit of an incline where they can focus on staying balanced without needing to pedal at the same time

When I taught the kids I nannied I didn’t take the wheels off but bent them up on the sides so the wheel was the lowest part and the training wheels a bit above. Then kept bending it more and more until they got it.

Finally got some snow! I feel like we don't get snow like we used too. As a follow up to last week, my boss is very much in the same frame of mind as me. He's going to talk with administration (he's also a certified administrator) and see if he can promote a more conscious frame of thinking around the cameras in the building. The whole team is basically on the same page actually, which is good!

I feel that way about snow too! It comes and goes so fast now and so much less often :(

It's so delightfully funny to see the sudden change in demeanor and sense of urgency that comes moments before "DADDY I HAVE TO GO POOP ON THE POTTY" and little barefeet slapping their way to the toilet

Has anyone got or looked into those Yoto music players? I might get one for the kids at some point, there seems to be some ways to hack them a bit like buying cheap NFC cards instead of the official ones. But I wonder if you can go deeper

My wife is like a brand ambassador for Yoto, she loves that thing for the kids. My oldest has probably had one since she was like 2.5 years old, and it took a little, but manages her own cards pretty well. She loves it, won't get in the car without it.

We have like, draw along to the story, education lame ass cards, stories, music, whatever. I gotta say, it's been pretty nice. Mostly used in the car, not as much at home, but sometimes.

I have a 1.5 year old right now that seemingly has no interest in it beyond dancing, if that is at all helpful.

It's great to hear all the good feedback on them. I think I'll wait for a sale and it can be a random middle of the year present

We have one and I love it. You can buy make your own cards and it comes out to about three dollars a card. You can put any mp3 audio on them and if you have a friend with playlists that they made they can share them with you and you can put them on a card. I’ll share any playlists I have made with you.

It also has a daily podcast and a kid friendly radio. The radio has a daytime setting and a nighttime one, it automatically adjusts.

It’s just been so fun for me because it feels a little like making mixtapes and I pull a bunch of audio off of youtube using youtube to mp3 and making cards out of things he loves but not enough to spend 20 dollars on.

Also it makes it easy for other people to buy gifts for the kids that don’t take up a lot of space.

Also it has a headphone jack so that was good for airplane travel.

Overall, one of the best toys he owns.

That's good to hear. My kids are obsessed with Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys so I could put it on a card with other songs they like. It could also be used for their bed time music instead of the shitty speaker in the baby monitors we use at the moment

It usually comes with one make your own card so if you do get it for Christmas open it up and put the song on the card. The app and website are also really easy to figure out. It really is so much better than the tonies for anyone willing to do a little bit of work.
