Hobbit conscripts are Gandalf's favorite unit

I was gonna say that Gandlaf made the Baggins immensely wealthy, but, well, the Baggins were already quite well off in Hobbit soceity

I'd always assumed they were wealthy due to Gandalf's previous medling generations back, thought the adventurous hobbits were possibly mentioned in an old appendix somewhere so perhaps I've over invented the prestory in my head

You might be right, Gandalf seems to know Pippin Tooks great aunt pretty well.

It would not surprise me to know that he's been playing a bit of natural selection over the generations

It's not that easy to find an intelligent chicken to carry around your haunted jewellery for you.

A piece of presumptive fan lore which should be mentioned as often as Aragorn's broken pinky toe is the idea that Gandalf may have fathered some hobbits in his rebellious youth, and that might be the reason why he's so fixated on them.

Of course, the second, more reasonable theory is that he's drawn to their innate purity like a moth to a flame.

The 3rd one that I favour is he's hooked on their weed.

Clearly the halfling leaf has clouded his judgement.
