I heard about a current push by some investors who say squeenix hasnt done enough monetization. So instead of all the remakes and sequels they should just make everything a gacha pay to win. Konami tried that for a while too then went back to making games when they realized they made way more by selling sequels (silent Hill f) and remakes (silent hill 2, metal gear delta)

SNK is another company that came back to making video games, they invested in pach*nko hard in the 2000s.

Of course now they're owned by the Saudis and can make as many flop Fatal Fury sequels as they want.

Going public and being at the mercy of shareholders has totally hollowed out two of the best game developers in history. Total bummer. I think the company is a walking corpse at this point and the sign of the end was when square enix got into nfts. That really showed what their priorities were
