If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

From Doc's Veterinary Wildlife

Owls come in all sizes! We could not resist the opportunity to compare the size of the northern saw- whet owl, weighing 104 grams, to the Eurasian eagle- owl, weighing 2900 grams. And yes- both birds are fully grown!

These are not even the largest and smallest, though they are close to both extremes. The Elf Owl is smallest, followed by some types of Pygmy Owls, and the Blakistons Fish Owl is usually a smidge larger than the typical Eagle Owl.

DEFINITELY the grumpy small one!

Saw Whets have such lovely expressive faces! They have an extensive array of facial markings so unlike a lot of other owls, it can be easy to pick out distinct individuals.

Saw Whet was last year's Owl of the Year winner (this year's games going on right now!) for being so cute and tiny, but also a wide range of expressions from severe rage to "I just saw a ghost!"

I grew up in the black forest and as little me roamed the woodlands with my friends, the big fellow flew over us. I think my soul left my body for a minute.

It's certainly a whole lot of bird! 😄

Vets: Lol, owlz.

Saw-Whet: I will fuck you ALL UP!

EEO: Uh, put me back in my house please kthx

There is no correlation between size and attitude 😆

I'd say it's generally inverse! Haha

Though here the little guy is like "is it morning, already?"

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

I suppose Eagle Owl is naturally intimidating, Saw Whet has to go out and prove it every day.

That woman looks so proud of her owl lol

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

That Saw-Whet just gave her some great financial advice that will save her thousands on student loans AND told her good for nothing boyfriend to pack his sh*t and get the f**k out. She luvz him.

I've only held some small owls, and their volume:mass ratio is already crazy to experience. I really want to hold one of these huge ones. Owls are around 40-60% air, basically.

The little one looks like it just woke up, so cute

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago

It does not consent to be photographed.

Both please, the more the better!

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Got to catch 'em all!

Not even 3 kg? This superbowl looks huge! The real question is: can I boop it?

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

Owls are so deceptive with their weight!

You absolutely can boop it, but the question is should you boop it. Owl beaks are nowhere near as strong as the feet, but it could still give you a permanent reminder of the time you booped an owl! 😅

[–] domi@lemmy.secnd.me 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I didn't know owls can get this large. That's a huge chonker.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

The average Blakiston's Fish Owl is more massive, and the Great Grey is longer, thanks to an exceptionally long tail, but the Great Grey is much lighter.

And here's the smallest, the Elf Owl:

Even Elf Owl is a badass though. It lives in a cactus and eats scorpions like they're popcorn shrimp.

[–] anthropomorphized@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Great pics. A+. I love those Fish Owls so much

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

They are some of my favorites!

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago (2 children)

I want some of the coffee the big boi had.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The little guy could probably use some, too.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Just a thimble full for him or he may burst!

[–] Foreigner@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Both. I want both and everything in between!

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

Owls for all!

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'll take the small with the brown hair please thank you

I don't recommend touching wild animals... Or vet techs 😜

With how I've seen my clinic director grab wild canids, you might get more than you bargained for!
