If you find an injured owl:
Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.
Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.
Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.
If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

Ashy Faced

Love Noctowl, but this wittle ashy face, my heart.
Ashy is so special looking. I don't know why/how I haven't posted more of them before!
There has been some difficulty getting this owl classified. It was originally a subspecies of Western Barn Owl (Tyto alba), then it became a monotypic species, and in 2023, 2 subspecies of American Barn Owl got reclassified as subspecies of the Ashy Faced Owl.
I love that we're still figuring stuff out. The classification of "famous" animals like owls feels like something that humans figured out long ago, but scientists are still discovering new connections to refine and correct existing models. That's freaking awesome!
This is also a tough vote between two beautiful owls. I'll keep my vote a secret, but both of them are great candidates.
That's been one of my biggest surprises about owls as well-that they've fascinated us since ancient times, but we really know so little about many of them.
Most only do stuff at night, they tend to avoid people, and they live high up in trees, and can fly away from us before we even see them.... if we can even see them with that crazy camo!
Modern genetic testing, satellite photos, drones, GPS, and more modern tech is letting us study them to a level of detail that was never possible and to go places that weren't safe or feasible for people to go for long periods to study them.
It's a great time to live owls!
I've stunningly lived the underdog , errr, under owl, in just about every dang match so far, and this one looks to be no exception so far! 😟
Good thing I always get to post what I like anyway!
Screech picked up a clear and straightforward win over Tawny Fish in a match that mirrored Eagle vs Ural. Screech is just so well known and well loved that it's hard for a rarer owl to knock it off.
Tawny is a great owl, and we do have Buffy Fish Owl and Blakistons coming up still, so genus Ketupa is still well represented and has a chance to get some more love.
Screech is looking fairly well positioned now, and has a solid chance of meeting Saw Whet in the later rounds if it holds on to its edge. Screech absolutely has the ability to take on last year's winner and even come out ahead. That red color morph is very popular, and it's got the same small and cute thing going on as the champ.
My boy's gone :( I'll have to do some proselytism for the remaining fish owls!
It gave its best showing, but in the end, there can only be one Owl of the Year. It still did pretty well, since over 200 owls didn't even make it in the games to begin with.
I know I really enjoyed getting a refresher on what all makes the fish owls different from each other besides coloration.
I usually focus on Buffy as my top overall fish owl, but I'll try and get some more Tawny, and Brown for that matter, shown in the daily posts.
I'll try and get some more Tawny, and Brown
I'll be looking forward to that! :)
Aw man this is hard. The Ashy could be my barn owl substitute, but I can't say no to those eyebrows. I've voted for both and I'm happy to see either go through.
Can't go wrong voting for both! 😁
