I’ve been finding a lot of games incorporate similar soul-like elements. Space Marine 2 and Stellar Blade most recently and it scratched the same itch.
Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes
This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".
Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.
Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:
[BB] This enemy is so difficult!
or
[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Witcher 3. The combat made me miss soulslike combat. It's not bad, but at a certain point you can pretty much auto attack and kill everything without thinking. Still a good game though.
It certainly makes me realize how bullshit some games difficulty actually is. Went back to the Witcher 3 recently, and my God it's difficult to see attacks coming sometimes.
It’s hard for me to play action RPGs games after playing anything Fromsoft makes. There’s something about the combat that almost always feels off and hard to enjoy.
Ever since Dark Souls 1 started clicking with me.
Nooooo....
Definitely not me....
Now, I must get back to my 5+ playthrough of Elden Ring in a row. My ^Sword^ ^of^ ^Night^ ^and^ ^Flame^ awaits!
I play RPGs for the story and the imagination and would rather combat not get in the way
Ugh, since Elden Ring dropped it has taken me over a year to finish playthroughs of anything that isn't a soulslike ( with only like 2 or 3 exceptions. I have abandoned a bunch of games as well... )
I currently have a subscription going on so I've been trying to take advantage of the games offrered that otherwise I 'd never play. I have been pushing through gameplay that does nothing for me to enjoy the stories, lower the difficulty to the min. so I can just get it done. Since they'll eventually go away I feel the pressure of continuing... (But I also just got Nightreign, dammit)
I still need to adress my backlog, I like a lot (almost) all of the games I have in there but I feel progression is too slow, and somes I freeze not wanting to fuck up the story... Idk I find them more emotionally draining, most other combat boring (again with a few exceptions). Most are RPGs, and I fire them up every few months, play 5 hours in one sitting and promptly forget for months again...
When I played BB for the first time I realized that was a game made for me, everything clicked and I fell in love with the genre. Outside of it very few games have been able to capture me in a simmilar way, but every soulslike I have loved.
Edited to properly answer the question
I get that urge of wanting to min-max PS+. Honestly felt quite liberating to just ditch it altogether and not stay subscribed for the odd game every couple months I might be interested in. Saves me money and I actually get to keep games I play.
It sounds like you're subscribed to Extra? How do you like it overall? I felt like it wasn't worth the money overall. Plus the price spikes in the past year or so made it even less appealing
I'm seriously going to schedule the remaining time to make sure I finish those games and get my money's worth, ha!
I'm on essential but the plan is to upgrade to extra to play demon souls , but only after finish at least a game besides lies of P ( for which I need to do a dlc replay as well for the sweet, complete trophy case :P ) DeS It's been in the catalog since I've had the subscription, I'm not sure how often they change the list.
It's .. Hum a bit ambitious now that I put it on writing....
Demon's Souls was fun overall. I feel like a month or two is worth it for that - especially if you play other games as well
Yeah I’m deep in it right now. Played Lies of P as my first soulslike, then Dark Souls - dipped my toes in DS2, but saved that sweet mess for later - and now I’m playing DS3.
I have absolutely no interest in other games with the overall action rpg formula. And I am not sure I want to combat it. I don’t feel like playing other games, so I won’t.
But this only apply to action rpgs. I still play a lot of retro platformers and rally games. Games like Zelda I also don’t count as an action rpg so I don’t compare it to Souls games. I also still have Spider-Man 2 on my backlog and looking forward to is. Again because I don’t really see a comparison between the gameplay/mechanics/genre Spider-Man and Souls.
I played both Horizon games, but have no interest in the next one. The same with God of War and Devil May Cry. As soon as we get into the very combat focused action rpg territory I have lost all interest.
And while those games still have merit and people who are into those kinda games should totally enjoy them. I’m not one of those souls fans that will knock on people for not liking what I like. But I just can’t see passed how great this genre can be.
