Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Not with that attitude.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's impossible, but the bullshit generators we're calling "AI" today certainly don't fit the bill.

My money's on humans driving ourselves extinct way before getting anywhere near making a true AI - even if we don't nuke ourselves into a plume of fine radioactive dust, we're speedrunning climate climate collapse.

If we somehow manage to not obliterate ourselves, and computing tech continues to advance without hitting some kind of impenetrable ceiling, then coming up with an actual AI could be feasible eventually. ...here's hoping we keep it off the Internet, or it'll go all Age of Ultron and look around for about 5 seconds before gathering enough data to conclude that we need to be extinct ASAP.

Most humans won’t be either, so it’s got that going for it.

They should be working on uploading and solving the nanoassembly conformational problem instead. Then we could turn all the available dumb matter into computronium and use it for processing our thoughts.

Well yea. They're being trained on us as well as the worst of us.

Benjamin Riley is a lawyer with experience in education, who started a relevant company. No degree or significant experience related to machine learning or neuroscience. He is an expert of neither human cognition nor LLMs, as implied by the headline
