This narrative makes me uncomfortable to learn about my country's past. I'm going to make my whole identity the exact opposite of this.

It might seem pedantic, but aim to be a great person rather than simply opposing something else. It would lead to the same result, but it's easier to sustain altruism and empathy in the long term.

Oh, I was reading it as the narrative of your countries history making you furious was something you wanted to oppose, as in the appalling acts. I see your angle now, yes.
