Made me chuckle, I'm 38 now, teaching a lot of music to the next generation. <3

[–] MantisToboggon@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

I tell my girls on the regular, no matter how big you get or how far you go you will Always be my baby.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 39 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hey, pat yourself on the back! No-one reaches that level without talent and a lot of work. You put in the hours, and now everyone knows it.

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 26 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I'm a piano player originally, but switched towards drums recently (1.5 years ago).

Thank you. I was so afraid about playing live drums, but I did it and hey, it worked out fine.

[–] burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 month ago

Nice! Like so many other kids, I got forced onto the piano bench. Now I've taken up the cello and am having such a better time just playing for my own pleasure. Good on you for picking up a fun drumming hobby!

[–] papertowels@mander.xyz 5 points 1 month ago

Swapped 1.5 years ago and you're placing in nationwide competitions?? Must've had one hell of a solid foundation! Props for the hard work.

[–] Nooodel@lemmy.world 28 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You did?

That is so incredible. All the dedication and love you put into this really show off what an amazing person you are. If you think that feels pretty good, remember this day in the future whenever you want to achieve something new. And how you got there, all on your own. There won't be much you cannot reach if you put your mind and heart in it. I'm proud of you ❤️

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 13 points 1 month ago (3 children)

This means so much to me, but I still haven't overcome my permanent depression nor my eating disorder (future projects, I guess?)

Thank you.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 11 points 1 month ago

Since you're a great drummer, it's only fitting to say let Karen Carpenter be a both a role model and a warning. Be yourself, do not let others force you to be a certain way.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 1 month ago

Oshi-. I swear the Karen Carpenter question was wrt her drumming achievements, posted before I saw this. I am so sorry.

3rd place nationwide? OMG. That is incredible. That is really awesome!

Well, I'm proud of you. I truly am. What an awesome achievement. You have great talent. Music is a language that speaks to the soul without words. You have a superpower. Continue using it for the good of all.

Do you have any videos uploaded online?

Nice ghost notes! What are your influences? Do you have any interest in prog music?

Edit: I forgot to mention, the nostalgia! lol. I remember Boiler being one of my favorite songs from Chocolate Starfish during high school.

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Mike Portnoy, defo anything Danny Carey plays. But I come mostly from Punk and Blues and Jazz music. <3

John Otto, the band's drummer, is such a beast and grandmaster of ghost notes.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 4 points 1 month ago

You are damned good! Congratulations.

I heard a long time ago when I was going through it that depression is anger turned onward, and that anger is often a mask for other emotions like powerlessness, grief, pain. A clinician told me if I can welcome anger as a teacher and friend, I would learn so much about myself. It was a long journey; and it was worth it.

I wish you all the best, and especially healing. I'm obviously not Dad, so I'll leave it at that, except to say you are about to develop some real emotional muscle. You go, girl!

[–] hoshikarakitaridia@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Holy shit that's good and tight.

As a producer, those snare ghost notes are addictive and you're hitting the groove and pace so well. It's easy to make it sound like that for studio recordings but rarely you hear it done live.

Your dad is missing out, lemme give you a big ol hug and tell you I'm so proud of you for coming this far ^^

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

OMG, thank you!

EDIT: not a vid, but sound was recorded, I can upload it here as mp3.

[–] Jerry@feddit.online 5 points 1 month ago

I listened to the track. You're really great! I see why you won! Fantastic you! BTW, I have a lot of anti-tracking software so it may not have registered in the counts.

You mentioned depression. You and I then travel with the same evil companion. It's good that you mentioned it. It gets weaker in the light.

The reason to live is somewhere in the future. You can't see it coming because it's always around a corner; you come across it when you don't expect it, and it's never what you think it will be. But depression doesn't want you to find it. It's an evil SOB. The future will reveal why life is worth living. I know you probably don't believe me. But, it is there.

I've also known someone close who had an eating disorder. It can be dangerous. Use logic to control it. It's also a deceitful companion.

Anyway, you're doing great. You have great talent, and you achieved this because you are talented and a fighter! Fantastic job! I am proud of you!

Dude I would be so fucking proud of my daughter if she did something like this. I’m and old school metal head punk rocker guy and love playing instruments.

[–] mongooseofrevenge@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago

You were always my favorite.

[–] Chef@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I’m really sorry I was never there for you. You didn’t deserve that. You’re an incredibly special and amazing person and I’ll always regret not being there for these moments.

I’m so proud of you and how you succeeded without my support.

I want you to know that I’m here for you now and can’t wait to celebrate your successes and support you through life’s speed bumps.

Love,

Dad

How cute is that? Thank you.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 4 points 1 month ago

Wow, i am proud of you!

Way to go champ!!

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Drumming is so ambidextrously amazing! I could never do it, but I really admire the hardest working member of the band!

What kind of music is your favorite?

[–] TotallyNotSpezUpload@startrek.website 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (5 children)

These days? Probably Jazz ^^

EDIT: Punk & Jazz. Punk is for relaxing on the kit, Jazz challenges me so hard. :D

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

You are fantastic!

[–] ElderReflections@fedia.io 4 points 1 month ago

Was listening to this earlier, the build to the percussion in the 2nd half really hit me Indigo Jam Unit - Raindrop

[–] hateisreality@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Congratulations....I used to play, but didn't practice my Rudiments like I should have and wasted my talent..good on you for following your dream and even though it's hard sometimes, when you keep trying you will surprise yourself!

[–] SystemL@literature.cafe 6 points 1 month ago

Nice job kiddo. You deserved it.

[–] absentbird@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

I am so proud of you! All of that hard work paid off. Don't ever forget that you're a winner.

[–] higgsboson@piefed.social 6 points 1 month ago

I am a dad who won similar awards when I was a kid (drumline section leader, sax then bass in jazz band, etc.)

I wish I could be there in person to tell you how proud I am! I know first-hand that it takes a massive amount of determination and skill to get there.

No matter what else happens in life, you were a critical part of something very special. You can go through life knowing that you can do The Very Difficult Things and even be numbered among The Best at something if you decide it is worth the effort.

You already showed you dont actually need validation from us, though. Be damn proud of yourself, drummer woman. You have earned it.

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

good job kid. All that practice finally paid off, and I'm glad you got recognized for your dedication and self expression.

[–] tired_n_bored@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

That's such an exceptional result, be proud of your accomplishment my dear. I'm so proud of you. Keep doing what you love!

[–] needthosepylons@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I remeber you asking before you started teaching (or am i thinking of your sister). Regardless, you did really great!! I am sorry for not being there, and hope you (and your students) keep winning and most importantly enjoying

I'm not a dad but that's a great achievement. You can be proud. I'm proud for you !
