So in Qatar, we need Max to win the race, Oscar to come second, Lando to come 9th, and then in the sprint, Oscar to win, Max in 8th and Lando behind Max. There's other ways to do it as well of course but that sets up a three way tie going into Abu Dhabi.

Piastri will bottle and we get Yuki to take out Lando, easy peezy.

[–] Cyclist@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

The only way Yuki is taking out Lando is if he's getting lapped.

Statement by McLaren team principal Andrea Stella:

β€œDuring the race, both cars experienced unexpected, high levels of porpoising not seen in the Practice sessions, which led to excessive contact with the ground.

We are investigating the reasons for this behaviour of the car, including the effect of accidental damage sustained by both cars, which we found after the race, and that led to an increase of movement of the floor.

We apologise to Lando and Oscar for the loss of points today, at a critical time in their Championship campaigns after two strong performances from them all weekend. As a team, we also apologise to our partners and fans, whose support means so much.”

Incredible work from McLaren in the second half of this season to give max a viable shot at the championship.

Max is within a race points haul again, I cannot believe how much you can't count him out

[–] Luvs2Spuj@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Almost, I still think it needs a collosal fuck up again next week.

Bottle Norris won’t let you down

Colossal fumble by McLaren. Can't believe Verstappen is equal in points to Piastri now.

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix after both their cars were found not to comply with technical regulations.

Post-race, the rearmost skid wear on both McLaren MCL39 machines was found to be below the minimum 9mm thickness by technical delegates on inspection.

They gambled and lost. Oh well.

A year after first reports of McLaren cheating w/ skid blocks surfaced, finally caught. So are they gonna disqualify them for the whole season? Because they definitely been running them the whole time. Last week in brasil they were already found out. This week they had to run without. And boom: Plank wear.

Oh goody. Another fucking max championship.

[–] Goodeye8@piefed.social 12 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Hardly. Norris would have to bottle the next races or Yuki would have to do Crashgate 2: Electric Boogaloo or divine intervention strikes down the car. And of course Max would have to keep giving 100%.

Max has driven phenomenally and he is well deserving of the championship title, but it's not a question of whether he wins it, it's a question of whether Norris will lose it.

[–] Microw@piefed.zip 1 points 8 hours ago

But that's the point made today: it's not only down to the drivers. If a team fumbles - be it with scrutineering like today, or with a pit stop, or strategy, or sending the driver out at the wrong time in quali - that could easily change things up again. F1 is a team sport. Even if Norris locks in, his team could fuck up.

[–] Mavytan@feddit.nl 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

24 point difference right now, up to 58 points left to earn. I agree Norris has to fumble, but it's not unforseeable that Max wins.

1 DNF from Norris and it's likely over. Alternatively, Max wins everything, Norris gets a 3rd and a 4th place in the main races and 2nd in the sprint (or another combination where Norris isn't 2nd or 1st each race). Both scenarios are unlikely to happen, but not exactly a long shot either.

Does pole position still give a point? Those could really make a difference in these last races.

[–] calamitycastle@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago

You mean fastest lap? Qualifying has never given points (to the best of my knowledge).

Fastest lap point was retired after Ricciardo's humiliating final action of his career, nicking points away from McLaren on behalf of his team ~~Red Bull~~ Racing Bulls

Honestly, I was a bit uninterested in seeing him win by a billion seconds and walk to the championship in recent years... But this season is a close title fight and it would be a pretty cool story to see him come from so far back, in my opinion! What a collapse from McLaren! And that's not to discount Max's incredible driving skill, we've seen it on display in spades this season.

Simply lovely!
