This shit was already well under way while the “progressives” were supposedly in charge.

People like to pretend like authors of dystopian fiction are one of two things (normally both, one after the other): alarmist pessimists who think the sky is falling, or infallible prophets who wrote this world into existence with their amazing soothsaying powers.

In reality, they're just observant people who see the writing on the walls for what it is: clear warning signs of impending doom.

Issue is, the dominionist cult, that pushes this ultra-conservative christianity bullshit on not just the US, but on the whole world came into existence in the seventies at the latest, while The Handmaid's Tale came out in 1985. If anything, the novel reflected about what was about to come, rather than some religious fanatics plagiarizing the book.

"But then why I haven't heard earlier about this?" The dominionists exploited the ridicule such "conspiracy theories" usually get. Frank Zappa tried to call it out, only to instantly destroy his career with it, many labeling him as a conspiracy theorist. Even minor callouts met with frustration, Richard Dawkins mentioning that "the evangelists are pushing hard for Israel due to their beliefs" in his book The God Delusion met with calling him a "antisemitic conspiracy theorist", with later revisions even removing references to it. And nowadays, most liberals and many leftists are calling the conspirators as "not real christians", because "Obama was a real and good christian unlike those fakes in the republican party" and "you should grow out of that Reddit atheist phase of yours". Truly "they go low, we go high".
