Yesterday it was the flag of the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement, before that it was Palestine, before that it was Tibet, before that it was Ukraine.

It's not directed against any one country, government or political party. It is against authoritarianism wherever it occurs and all it's forms.

Why? Don't you think it might turn many people off? This sends the message like "we are aware of policitcs on PieFed and we have strong opinions on a lot of topics here. You can speak, we let you speak. This site is all about politics".

And it might end up being all about politics just like you wish. And I don't think it's a good idea. I think it's better to create a chill space for people. Allowing politics disucssion of course, but this right here and what you just said sends "politics-first" kind of vibes.

This place is based on politics. You are on a decentralised, open-source space with mamy people being various kinds of left.

Without politics this place will probably become hollow and eventually die.

People tend to ignore politics in their life, while the system we live in destroys us. It is a good idea to talk about politics (and do stuff about it).

I mean... instances aren't universal. Owners can do whatever they want, and it kinda works because there are other places to go, though this isn't particularly dramatic anyway.

It's politics. I'm super surprised Rimu does this. It's super grey area. It's constant war between people all around the world. It's very diffcult to have absolute truths here.

For starters, there islam symbol right in the face. You say its some country flag? How average user would know that? They will think islam immediately. Many people would argue that islam religion and islam countries are kind of authoritarian as well, not like China authoritarian, but different kind of. Women in islamic countries have very limited rights compared to men. What about that? Are we condemning that? Are we condemning commie-like state authoritarism and Israel or also other kind of oppression? If so, why? Why not also show flags of social groups like LGBT who claim that they are also oppressed? There are plenty of social groups around the world who claim they are oppressed by other groups, by country they live in etc. And if rimu wants show love to all of them it will quickly turn into shitshow because many of them are actually also against each other and contradict each other, Like for example LGBT is banned in islam states like Palestine. They might walk next to each other in some protest here and there but thats jsut temporary, as soon as protest ends and they achieve their goals, they are on opposite sides because they don't agree on fundamental level.

Kyrgyzstan is known for having a strong democracy by the standards of Ex-USSR countries.
The Christians in Egypt or Lebanon are not really less authoritarian than the Muslims there.

But okay: You are telling that women in Albania and Kyrgyzstan have very limited rights compared to men. I would like you to give some examples of how that shows there, because that was not my impression in either country. I mean, yeah, women have worse rights than men, but is it worse in Albania than in, say, Armenia, which is the oldest Christian country on this planet.

BTW, currently the logo is the rainbow flag. Funny reading your comment complaining about it not being there when it actually is. Now. You are arguing that LGBT being banned in the Russia and Palestine means that Christianity and Islam are religions against LGBT. I would like you to elaborate on that view, please!

I bet all the people who were happy yesterday cause because they saw symbol of their religion are also very happy today because they see symbol of homosexuals who btw are sentenced to death in some islamic countries because of that very same religion.

Maybe the idea is that people will eventually accept this. Wrong. Only atheist / agnostic could come up with this idea. Well, majority of the world is not atheist /agnostic and it won't change soon. This approach will attract people with similar mindset, so those for whom "it doesnt matter" but will repell those for whom it matters. Christians, Muslims, homosexuals are fundamentally in conflict with each other, whether you like or not. It's because the books they are reading today are the same books they read 1000 years ago. No word is added and will ever be added. It's beacuse humans don't evolve that quickly like some maybe would want. Our genitals looks the same as 10000 years ago. Our cerebellum similarly. It's not like we can make those conflicts disappear as much as we want to. You cannot force world peace by just grouping people with different beliefs together and tell them there is no conflict.

That's why the best strategy is for services and products to stay neutral, if they want for people to be using them. Unless of course you want to sell your services to specific group of likeminded people.

So I believe most development work is done on piefed.social. Its like the bleeding edge instance. The thumbnails been changing between a half dozen and dozen different ones lately with maybe different pages having them. I think its just testing. This is all from my butt though based on being on the instance. I have not insider knowledge. I really like being on piefed.social to see the goodies first.

They have been displaying random (?) flags for a few days, now. Kinda annoying as I don't care much about flags and politics online and I managed to filter out almost all politics out of my feed... until I noticed those flags. Like I commented here if they really insist on keeping doing that it won't last long before I get tired enough of it and stop using piefed. And no, using uBo to regularly block that logo/flag is not a good enough solution for me ;)

Thx, the issue is that I really don't look forward to setup a new instance (losing all my comments, once more time plus no assurance it won't happen over there later on). I feel more and more like even the Fediverse is not something for me... Which I may one day very simply be completely fine with like when I decided to give up on traditional social media.

It's just... no matter how symbolic & insignificant it is (I was tempted to write 'how childish it is', to be honest), I think it's not the smartest type of action they could have made. And that makes me feel sad for all of us as I see so many of those 'dumb' moves taking the lead almost everywhere, in a time where a hint a smartness and of moderation would be needed more than ever. And could help so much.
