If you don't, no need to reply telling me you don't. I live in the woods with some critters. I live pretty far from neighbors/police so having a gun gives me peace of mind. I also hunt and consider myself a gun hobbiest. I enjoy shooting targets, cleaning/organizing, reloading and earning food with guns.

I grew up in a family of overly-armed suburban conservatives, so inheriting a significant number of guns was always a given. A few pieces have sentimental value tied to the relatives who originally owned them. I don't use any of them, though. Hunting never interested me. Target shooting is fun once in a while, particularly trap and skeet, but I have too many other priorities vying for my time and money. If I were to get back into target shooting I would switch to archery.

Need no? Want? Only flint lock and before that for decoration because pretty. So they also wouldnt be able to shoot

Don't have any because I don't go hunting and don't live in a rural setting.

If I lived in a remote a remote area, it depends on whether I pick up hunting deer or just need something to drive away wild animals or hunt small game. Moat likely I would have a .22 rifle or lower powered shotgun for small game/vermin or driving off smaller predators. Plus guns are fun to shoot and that ammo is more affordable than higher caliber stuff. Higher caliber would require actual deer or large game hunting.

I also think guns are really neat from an engineering perspective, similar to an engine. Using explosions in a very controlled way to get a result is awesome. Definitely not worth having around without a purpose though.

Frequently drive multiple hours through BFE in some very meth infested country. Go camping in national forest lands every other week during the summer where cougars abound. And in the case of my parents, ranch pest control and something to make use of the landowner permit deer tag they get once in a while.

I don't carry in town vast majority of the time, for obvious reasons, but I've got plenty of reasons to have a couple firearms. They are useful tools like any other. Also high precision target shooting is fun af.

It's like having two dicks and it's much larger than the one that I was born with.

What do you have other than the .22?

:-D!!

I hunt. I also like to shoot at targets. Currently looking for my next gun that is going to be used for long range bird hunting. Thinking of a 6.5x55SE (6.5 sweedmoor :)) because it's actually cheaper than anything other than 22lr and handgun cartridges over here in Scandinavia.

Been thinking about getting into hand loading because my .338WM is quite expensive to shoot but that will probably have to wait for next year.

I have a rifle and a revolver, but they're both limited edition items that my grandfather got from a steel mill where he worked, so they're a "shoot if you have to" kind of thing.

I'd like to have more, because I enjoyed target shooting as a kid. However, they're not cheap, and I'm not sure I have the time.

At the same time, I'm in the US and the inmates are running the asylum, so I feel like I should have more.

I grew up with shooting sports so it's normal for me, but I understand the reticence from people who aren't familiar. Guns are terrifying, and if you own one and stop treating it like a death stick at all times, you should consider getting rid of it.

How do you access the internet in the woods? Do you have a TV?

[–] phaedrus@piefed.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Not OP, but I also live in the woods (albeit I'm in a 4x4 vehicle and don't stay in one place for long periods).

The point for me is not to, and nature is my TV. When I do need internet, though, I'm in town stocking up on supplies or hanging out in a coffee shop.

Also, though, 5G and the abundance of towers means that hotspots work in a lot more places than they used to. More often than not, my phone still gets data even deep in the middle of nowhere. I'm not doing any gaming or streaming, but again I don't necessarily want to. It's just a tool to get information some times and make dumb internet comments.

...Hobbiest makes you sound like you're the most hobby of them all! THE HOBBIEST! Oh yeah, I love guns, it's a hobby of mine... You might even say it's the hobbiest of all. I'm the gun hobbiest.
