Researchers say they finally understand the connection between the autoimmune disease and Epstein-Barr virus.

One of the most common viruses in the world could be the cause of lupus, an autoimmune disease with wide-ranging symptoms, according to a study published Wednesday.

Until now, lupus was somewhat mysterious: No single root cause of the disease had been found, and there is no designated treatment for it.

The research, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, suggests that Epstein-Barr virus — which 95% of people acquire at some point in life — could cause lupus by driving the body to attack its own healthy cells.

Epstein-Barr strikes again. Is there anything this virus doesn't cause?

It feels like we know so little about what viruses do. And a large swath of America is in denial that they are bad.

Just wait for the craziness next time there’s value in a vaccine to kill a common virus like this.

I imagine it’s too early to decide the tradeoff even if we had an effective vaccine, but interesting to consider

This was like from s3 where House goes to a Vicodin stash he's put in a hollowed out lupus textbook.

He does get a case of lupus in the later seasons though. Iirc.

Epstein is always bad.
