MLK Jr said it best. The worst type of person in this country is the white moderate.

Full quote:

The white liberal must rid himself of the notion that there can be a tensionless transition from the old order of injustice to the new order of justice. Two things are clear to me, and I hope they are clear to white liberals. One is that the Negro cannot achieve emancipation through violent rebellion. The other is that the Negro cannot achieve emancipation by passively waiting for the white race voluntarily to grant it to him. The Negro has not gained a single right in America without persistent pressure and agitation. However lamentable it may seem, the Negro is now convinced that white America will never admit him to equal rights unless it is coerced into doing it.

Nonviolent coercion always brings tension to the surface. This tension, however, must not be seen as destructive. There is a kind of tension that is both healthy and necessary for growth. Society needs nonviolent gadflies to bring its tensions into the open and force its citizens to confront the ugliness of their prejudices and the tragedy of their racism.

It is important for the liberal to see that the oppressed person who agitates for his rights is not the creator of tension. He merely brings out the hidden tension that is already alive.

-- Martin Luther King Jr., Found Here

Edit: added link from whence I am quoting.

Worth noting: ~~OP~~ Another User responded with a different quote that largely captures the same meaning, also from MLK.

That's not the quote.

Here it is:

First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

Full letter with the above quote

(Specific paragraph is about halfway down the page)

Yep the other quote from the letter was the one I was referencing.

i'm so fucking disgusted by them i almost don't want to know their names because it feels like a slippery slope toward doing something quite uncivil.

the biggest one responsible everyone knows, murdoch and his media empire

I'm not surprised at all. It's like Tom and Jerry. If the cat catches the mouse, the show is over.

The only thing I have any optimism about in US politics right now is Zohran Mamdani. Just enough optimism to wait until he's mayor before judging him.

[–] Th3D3k0y@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I enjoyed the article about Mamdani where a bunch of people from the US are calling his plans "extremist" and "radical", then compared to EU and all his policies are more "you aren't doing this already?"

I don't even live in New York, city or state, but I was more excited for his win than my own Mayor, purely out of hope that this might prove we don't need a bunch of push-over dems trying to please all sides instead of pushing for the changes actually needed.

That was an absolutely fantastic watch, thank you for linking. I was just talking about this with my mom yesterday, I'll have to share this with her

I know this is going to get me hammered but I can not listen to somebody doing those speedy radio voices. It makes me rage for some reason and I don't know why.

Question - what eight senators have got as present for cave to Trump

[–] Asidonhopo@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

It's more than just the 8 who voted with the republicans. None of the 8 are up for reelection so the larger group who supported ending the shutdown (including schumer) colluded to have these 8 be sacrificial lambs.

[–] Exeous@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Tha k you, I not know this.

[–] Asidonhopo@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

FWIW its not obvious who the other collaborators on this vote were except schumer but they definitely exist

[–] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 hours ago
