Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

Nah that's arch linux from scratch is more like

Put some machines next to that and you got Gentoo, though from a different point of view.

    [–] Luci@lemmy.ca 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I feel like if you’re at that point you’re developing your own kernel (just a hobby project, won’t be anything big)

    [–] Devjavu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 21 hours ago

Nah' that's when you get into gene editing, or if you're old school just select it over and over again until it fits what you want.

    You forgot the Ubuntu socks:

[ Edit: I didn't understand the meme! See comments for context.]

Can we choose to stop having teenage girl manga leg fetish memes associated with Linux? That's my choice because it's not the 90s any more and I'm a middle-aged beardy father of three daughters. This meme is totally seedy and doesn't do any favours for Linux or Open Source.

It's not particularly funny and we can come up with far better memes without making it seem (yet again) like Linux might be mostly for creepy basement-dwelling nerds who haven't met many real women and who aren't creating a welcoming community which truly views women as something more than sex objects.

It's dinosaur-era shit, guys. Please make better memes!

I think the socks thing is more of a reference to trans people (or femboys or however they liked to be called) who like linux

    [–] oftenawake@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well in that case it went sailing over my head. I hope you're right! I'm a trans ally (my child is nonbinary) albeit nowhere near up to speed on a lot of stuff particularly memes.

I've lately been helping an older female friend through a shitty breakup where the fact the guy purely objectifies women in a cartoonish porno and pedo sense has been one of many disturbing revelations about what a creepy bastard he has turned out to be.

I guess I saw "disembodied vaguely sexualised teenage girl legs' and just felt grossed out because there are still a bunch of creepy old sexual predators out there and this meme gave me the same ick feeling I've been dealing with, knowing for sure that my teenagers are definitely not too young for a particular 65 year old in our town.

Basically I'm sick and tired of sexually predatory men and I will take them down whenever we encounter each other!

Anyway apologies for not getting the meme... which remains a meme I don't like, but obviously there's more to it than I realised.

    [–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 5 points 3 days ago

It didn't occur to me that the people in the graphic might be women. πŸ˜†

Respecting people is way more important than "getting" a meme, so your head's in the right place, regardless.

    [–] Zink@programming.dev 41 points 4 days ago (6 children)

I have the opposite reaction when I see these memes. To me it's a reminder of how inclusive some of my favorite nerdy communities are, on top of being a fun little in-joke like any meme should be. And I'm an old beardy middle aged dad too for whatever that's worth.

However, that doesn't mean the image itself is innocent or appropriate for most audiences. I'm not going to be asking the family's opinion on this one, lol. But I don't see it as a manga fetish thing at all. More empowerment than exploitation for the owners of the legs shown.

I like the way this comment assumes the unix socks meme is perpetuated by horny neckbeards, not horny transwomen.

    [–] oftenawake@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I like the way you assumed I even know what the unix socks meme is. Because somehow I don't beyond... socks and sandals? I dunno. It flew over my head, in this form. 25+ years on Linux. I have no explanation.

The transwomen I'm friends with aren't into Linux or stripey stockings AFAIK.

    Whoosh!

    [–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

To catch you up, transwomen Unix users have taken to posting pictures of their customised desktops while wearing stockings. I'm assuming it's part of their gender affirmation or a desire to share both interests at once.

This meme implies there are standard pairings of oses and stocking types.

ironically Debian is the straightest OS, it's named after the creator and his girlfriend who became his wife and he had kids with

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Murdock

He named Debian after his then-girlfriend (later wife) Debra Lynn Roundy, and himself.[4] They later married, had three children, and divorced in January 2008.[5]

Although obviously, straight people can make things for lesbians/lesbians can use things made by straight people (and they often do!)

    EDIT : I missed the obvious joke : Debian > ebian > (L)e(s)bian(s)

Gentoo requires you to grow the cotton, process it, and then knit the thigh-highs yourself

damnit, ordered the wrong color socks AGAIN. Wish the arch wiki would have this documented.

    [–] Ooops@feddit.org 35 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Arch comes without socks by default. It's up to you which ones you ~~install~~ buy.

    [–] twack@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago

That's just straight up Unix, the mother of it all.

I'm cool with little bow ties up top. That's a pretty good look for my 6'6 275lbs. very hairy body. I would feel so pretty in them!
