I legitimately might do this if I ever get an interview

Get a secure job, then interview. Keeps your skills up to date and lets you explain that for X amount you’ll do the work, but for in-office work there’s a 50% surcharge. For example.

The power shouldn’t always be on the recruiter side.

This can only happen by unionising.

I do contract work (not like I should be an employee but they're trying to screw me out of giving me benefits like Amazon workers, like I started my own business to sell my specific skill set) and while it's not this blatant it's absolutely similar. They want me exclusively? Pay me. You want to end my contract early? Pay me. Travel (that includes to and from the office)? That goes towards my working hours. Want me available at 2am? Pay me. Didn't tell me but called me at 2am for an emergency? Here's my emergency call out rate (it's extortionate).

Everything has a rate. Of course the downsides are that I'm footing my own benefits and when I take vacation I'm not getting paid, but it's been worth it.

To be honest, I think the way I'm treated is how all workers should be treated except with benefits. I'm extremely lucky to have the gig I have.

Most people don't seem to want to deal with business stuff because it's a pain on top of whatever the actual work is, but it's absolutely worth it to be in a position where you can negotiate.

Poop breaks have no time period specified so I'll assume it's for the full duration of the contract.
