Temple expansion is a way for them to spend excess money and bread about how the church is growing ("Look at all these temples we're building and expanding! We are such a successful organization!"). But in most cases it has no bearing on membership increases.

You can also route resources to existing temples rather than build new ones to get the same news stories while spending even less than you'd planned. Anything that sits you on new real estate is also spending money and only losing liquidity, not value.

Oh, god I thought Mormons were just a West Coast of the U.S. thing. They've spread outside the U.S.?

Utah and one or two states in any direction is obviously the "heartland," but they've been global for a long time. The congregation in Preston has been there since 1837, and that Temple since 1994. I grew up Mormon in Florida.
