My country never cared about this, but recently some people started getting fines. I generally pay for my games; I only use ReVanced and watch TV shows online.

What would be the cheapest VPN in the long run for this? As I said, I don't torrent, so port forwarding and stuff like that I don't care about.

There's also antimalware software bundled with the M365 subscription on Amazon; I've been using the VPN from that for a bit now.

Edit: Btw, do you think an antimalware VPN is safe? It's never been a problem (never like the USA, for example) over here in the EU, but recently they started slightly hunting pirates (never heard of anyone I know though). So yeah, maybe a simple VPN may suffice until they decide to go hardcore style?

Mullvad remains the gold standard for privacy and anonymity.

[–] chosensilence@pawb.social 18 points 1 month ago

Mullvad is what I use and I am very happy with them.

Proton VPN has a free plan with barely any restrictions.

[–] Ilandar@lemmy.today 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes, this seems like a good option for OP to try first considering they don't need torrenting.

I should also have said I sometimes use it for MMO gaming, in case my ISP fucks up and I need to play for a week or so before it's fixed (it just happened this week). I didn't remember this when I wrote the thread

Their free plan should be fast enough for MMOs. As long as it's not ultra fast paced like CoD

[–] gemew26@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

I'll try it then, thanks :)

The free plan is very limited in terms of server locations so it might not be a good option for gaming.

I have some friends who've used Mudfish in the past. It's a tunneling service with a Pay-Per-Traffic mode which is affordable if you only need it occasionally.

Mozilla VPN, which uses Mullvad on the backend, is cheaper if you do the annual plan.

But it's from the U. S.

Windscribe custom plan or pro if you can lock any good offer (I got 29$/year last year).

How long is “in the long run?” How much can you afford to spend? What country? How many devices?

For what you’re describing it doesn’t seem like places like mullvad or proton are the right choice. Nord is a good way to get past geofencing for decently cheap. Windscribe can also be cheap. Air is cheap if you’re not Italian.

Anti malware VPN services can be okay sometimes, I wouldn’t call them a serious option though because they’re often tied to use of some antimalware suite and may have glaring flaws when used without the rest of that software.

How long is "long term"? https://fastestvpn.com/ has a $40 lifetime plan, so that's probably the best value (assuming they stay around, but they've been around for a few years now).

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I bought their lifetime license like 5 or 6 years ago, still works to this day. I wouldn't use it for anything other than piracy though, if you actually need a private and secure VPN, use Mullvad, Proton or IVPN.

[–] gemew26@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

you would or you would NOT use it for piracy?

[–] Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Would use it for piracy, not if you need good privacy. It's good enough to avoid a complaint letter from your ISP when torrenting, but can you be sure that they don't sell your data to advertisers? I don't know. Will they respond to a law enforcement subpoena? Probably.

[–] gemew26@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

I'm more worried about the last point than the first. Stuff like Proton VPN wouldn't respond to a law enforcement subpoena? If you mean buying illegal things such as drugs I don't care; I'd use it for movies. I worry if this VPN may be good for pirating games even though I don't have plans to do that right now. I wonder if such a solution is better than an antimalware VPN?

Their life plan seems like a perfect solution, and if they don't have antivirus VPN bundled with M365 on Amazon Black Friday, or if you believe this isn't the best solution, that lifetime VPN may be good.

If you just want to stream, you could always use real debrid (or similar sevice) and Kodi. It also offers downloads through its service as well if you ever need it.

[–] PearOfJudes@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

If you want a free vpn, the only option is proton vpn. Personally I would recommend using proton vpn the paid version toom get a year subscription for black friday deal.

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I got surfshark for 2 years and gave it to all my relatives, it as unlimited machines.

[–] gemew26@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

this has been on my watch list for a while, seems like cheap and reliable but I've heard mixed feelings on reddit

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

I personally never had a single issue with it, speed, reliability etc. It integrates in FF and has standalone app for macOS, linux, win. android, but I remember reading some mixed reviews too.

Your country fines you for watching tv shows?

Torguard has really cheap deals.
