I'm realizing one of the fundamental problems with the field of mental health and therapy is the contradictory nature of knowing a person vs. not knowing. A therapist is supposed to have a certain level of professional detachment. But this also means they are unable to be in your corner the way a close friend would, preventing them from providing similar benefits. A therapist also just has a very limited scope of knowledge about you. Most of their information on you is based on the assumption that you're a reliable narrator about yourself and your life, which may not be the case. I imagine there's probably some training to look for signs of being an unreliable narrator, but overall, it's not like they can just go check with other people you know to see if your stories are straight.

But even if everything you present is accurate, even if they read between the lines and learn tics you have, all they are seeing is "therapy you" during a very limited time frame. They don't see how you are with friends, family, when you're out and about, etc.

In short, they don't really know you and if they did really know you, it would be hard for them to do their job in a professionally detached way. But without knowing you, most of what they can prescribe is generic advice. And that works some of the time. Like deep breathing techniques for anxiety, sure, that applies to a lot of people. But it's also advice you can find with a web search. I think there is something valuable in basic back and forth with a professional, but beyond that, I'm not sure it does much and it might make things worse if the therapist is professionally compelled to get you to "change". They can frame it as wanting to help you change in the ways that you want to change, but underneath that is the professional compulsion to show improvements relating to a standardized mental health designation of chronic issues.

I suspect a lot of people these days just need someone to talk to and that's part of why turning to an LLM as "therapy" is enough for them. Because for them, they don't really need the limited effectiveness therapy process in the first place. They just need something like the distance of talking to a therapist without feeling like they're being pushed in a certain direction. I mean, isn't it a bit weird that even in romantic relationships, the common refrain is you shouldn't get into a partnership expecting to change someone, but in therapy, it's basically the opposite; the expectation is that you come out different somehow. But if a romantic partner, a person who you'd expect to know you better than almost anyone, is not supposed to be someone who changes you, what qualifies a single individual who doesn't know you from very limited conversation sessions to help you change?

P.S. Did not realize this would come out so long. Thought about doing it as a post in freechat, but don't want it to come across as a broader anti-mental-health-field message. I have nothing against the intention of the field as a whole. Just have problems with it in practice and the logistical limitations of it.

All I know is that CBT is useless for Autistic people, at the very least.

DBT, EMDR, and/or somatic therapy might be more worthwhile.

If your therapist repeats at you CBT and you're neurodivergent or Autistic, it might not be worth it.

Also, beware of therapy abuse.

i must organize in order to live. life without a political purpose or motivation is to accept the suffering of millions. i love organizing with all my heart!

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm trying to find an org to join.

Lemme know if you have any advice.

[–] dg2jeng@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

i got introduced to my org through my friends. i think if you have any friends that are already organizing, go with them. i did this and found out that the deepest of all friendships is comradeship.

if you don't, however, i would make the decision based on three things:

  1. are they ML
  2. do they do/want to do mass work
  3. are they intense about political education

if yes, join. all the smaller ideological squabbles you can ignore. if there's no org like that around you, start one! black panthers started with six members.

I took my new medication Trintellix (a new antidepressant for MDD or major depressive disorder) about 3 or 4 hours ago.

It doesn't have a Generic yet; just Brand, as of the current year.

So far, I don't know how I should be feeling, but I don't think I feel bad.

[–] Makan@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 3 days ago

From what I understand so far, this is an experimental and new drug.

I got the party overviews for the upcoming elections in The Netherlands today as I am living in another country and need it up front. One of the participating parties is NL Plan which is set up as some sort of meme thing by a Chinese dude and it might unironically be the most leftist thing out there.

Free public transport, in favor of building affordable housing, pro migration, pro public healthcare, etc. But it's a joke of a party of course. The dude is pro China though lol.

There was a big event organized by a left wing party in Mexico and they invited plenty of parties in the world(primarily from Latin America).

It was so big that a lot of Europeans joined it including Serbian, French, Spain, Belarus and Moldovan. There were 3 parties from Russia: komros, KPRF and United Russia.

From Asia, we had Laotian, CPC and Vietnamese. (Edit 1 AND the DPRK's PTC)

In the event, the Venezuelans even explained there socialist communal system and the transition that they are currently planning to make to phase out the outdated representative bourgeois democracy at the base of society. Pretty interesting.

You can check out some of the participants in the following list.

Also, Palestinian comrades joined the event!

Is there a recording or transcript of this? If possible translated in English?

[–] rainpizza@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, there is a recording(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5upLhXC-kc) and the timestamps for the speech are the following:

8:44:50 - 9:14:38

However, sadly, I haven't found any transcripts of the speech so my suggestion here will be to find a way to download an exctract of the video using the timestamps that I shared above. After downloading the excerpt, you will have to find a tool that will help you with the transcription.

Also, the author Chris Gilbert have some books in English if you are looking to learn more! -> https://chrisgilbert.site/books/

Wow so is pushing the socialism button?

[–] rainpizza@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yes! There was an english speaking author that was following the process as well and also joined in the explanation during his presentation in the Seminar that I mentioned above. His name is Chris Gilbert and he has a couple of books in case you are interested to learn more.

Man I discovered working while standing and my productivity shot up.

[–] rainpizza@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 days ago

You are using this? 👀

[–] Commiejones@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I hope you're getting paid by production. Otherwise you need to find some good ways to slack off while standing.

[–] SlayGuevara@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 days ago

Whenever I sit down I have trouble formulating my thoughts but if I go for a walk it just starts streaming. Wonder if being neurotypical has anything to do with it.

Standing in general is just better for you anyway.

[–] blobii@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I always wonder… how many unarmed civilians would it take to overthrow a bourgeois state?

Excluding armed forces, there’s got to be a point where police get trampled and the pure horde forces submission to the socialist state.

[–] cfgaussian@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 3 days ago

The greatest weapon is organization.

[–] redchert@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You need weapons and military tactics. I don’t recall any government being overthrown by just average untrained joes.

[–] blobii@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

purely theoretical and idealist btw,I'm not that stupid lol. It'd just be funny to see 100 million untrained joes literally trample the bourgeouisie state unarmed.

holy shit people are fucking ridiculous, man.

leftistgamermemes literally used the word "socialism" to mean the benefits that would be available to all of us under a socialist economy as the concessions given to soldiers in exchange for their service to capital. Is it scientifically correct? No, but it isn't exactly wrong either. The things that your government employee; military or not; and much more, would be readily available to everyone under a socialist governance. Despite the meme doing very well on the page and actually doing okay on chapo, multiple people completely lost their fuckin' shit over a fucking meme I didn't even create.

Is this meme saying that socialism is when politicans get stuff or obviously that a select few enjoy the benefits we all would enjoy under socialism? Like jesus, people are acting like it's saying "socialism is when government does stuff" without looking deeper whatsoever into the context or the fact that it's playing off nostalgia to begin with. I genuinely had someone sitting there and asking me "if I knew how much damage this slop is doing" while at the same time telling me I'm overrepresenting it/deflecting/shifting blame on something I didn't even fucking create. Schrodinger's Slop.

Do veterans control the means of production? Are they democratically represented in government? Beyond some of them getting a pension or some equivalent, is there anything protecting them from the grinding gears of the class society that they are still in the underclass of?

not the tiny small-bean uwu baby-killers that literally get a plethora of benefits for themselves, their spouse and their children for literally servicing a death-machine. The thing protecting them from the "gears of class society" is their service and even then they are given a lot more than your average person to prevent them from "falling down". It as a system just has zero issue shrugging off the undesirables and "useless". There's plenty of soldiers out there who have recognized and realized otherwise, but I'm not going to pretend like most of them are good people. Sadly, a genuine chunk of the good ones killed themselves. I don't mean that in a edgy "haha dead soldier is a good soldier" but the ones high in empathy don't last too long.

I dunno about you but a three month old account seemingly fully dedicated to creating as much argument and division out of a fucking gaming meme screams really weird to me, but then again we have eight people posting the same question repeatedly without any further thinking or consideration than the tik-tok clip of Richard Wolf looping in their brain. Yes, I do know some of them were joking.
