SACRAMENTO, Calif — California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a law banning law enforcement from wearing masks on duty except for things like riot gear, medical masks and undercover work.

Saying it's the first bill of its type in the country, Newsom — a Democrat and frequent critic of President Trump — said it was a sign of growing authoritarianism to have detentions in by masked men "hidden from accountability, any transparency, any oversight. That's Trump's America."

The individual agents need to start being held accountable and know they can’t pull the “following orders” bullshit

Won’t ICE try to abuse some loophole?

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

According to ICE and nearly every LE dept out there they all now commonly do undercover work. So they won't have to do a loophole, they can just say all their officers do undercover work so they have to cover. Unfortunately there is zero transparency for LE in this nation (thank your elected officials and judges) so they can say whatever the fuck they want and keep covering up.

Tldr; Newsoms bill is another feel good law that will have zero effect.

Well to be fair the law is interpreted and then administered by judges and prosecutors.

The police uphold the law to the best of their ability at least in theory. So technically speaking local law enforcement can begin arresting what would appear to be ice agents since they don't identify themselves and have no identification and wear masks. There's really no way for them to determine if they are ice agents or not they're just armed masked men.

The interagency turmoil though that would be epic.

Like being a federal employee and not subject to state laws? Nah

I'm completely playing devil's advocate here but all Republicans have to do is say a ice agent was identified and tracked down. And they'll be up in arms regardless if anything happens, most likely staged

Ice agents should be identified and tracked down.

They should be. They are the modern day Gestapo. Identify, track, and hang them just like we did at Nuremberg.

They will just wear masks and say “who will enforce that?”
