"The flag of the United States shall be thirteen horizontal stripes, alternate red and white; and the union of the flag shall be forty-eight stars, white in a blue field."

Seems correct.

After reading the article on Wikipedia, it seems they have more rules about handling the flag than the Catholics have about the cross. And they don't follow around 2/3 of them, especially the MAGA types.

Edit: This made me read the code about my country's flag. A lot of the same stupid rules. This one made me burst out laughing: "If a flag is to stay out after dusk it should be well lit". Is it fucking afraid of the dark?

Flags when not in a well lit environment:

That one seems pretty standard. Either you take it down at sunset and put it up at sunrise, or you leave it up 24/7, and you need to have it lit up.

The weirder one for me is that you have to burn the flag if it touches the ground

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's a myth. But don't let the flag touch the ground is still stupid.

[–] CptEnder@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Naw it does always have to be within light. It comes from the revolutionary war "and our flag was still there"; in that our nation shall never see darkness. Sadly, unrelated to flag standards, that very much has not been the case.

I think your description of the American flag is out of date. We only had 48 stars from 1912-1959. Though that does mean a lot of the most iconic depictions of the flag do fit this.

i'll be in the cold cold ground before i recognize missourah. or utah.

[–] Nightlight17776@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

As a Utah resident I second this. It's different in here

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I think the next paragraph was about adding stars.

https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Flag_Code

Although this is a U.S. federal law, the code is not mandatory: it uses non-binding language like "should" and "custom" throughout and does not prescribe any penalties for failure to follow the guidelines. It was "not intended to prescribe conduct" and was written to "codify various existing rules and customs."

In this house we stand for the flag, and kneel after putting on a collar

Heck I'll kneel to put the collar on. Except for fascists. We don't kneel for those.

From now on I only acknowledge this flag. Love to all my trans women and trans men. I always got your back !

[–] kadup@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I'm not trans.

My trans friends were the ones who managed to make me laugh after literal years without doing so, and that fixed my self-image issues I had since I was a teenager. I'm now happily married in no small part due to that confidence boost.

I'll be on trans people's side no matter the direction this world takes.

is there anything specifying the stripes have to be separated by white or can the all be placed next to each other, or that the stars can't be placed on top of the white? 🏳️‍⚧️

[–] general_kitten@sopuli.xyz 11 points 3 days ago

a comment above explained the real rules but in short alternate red and white stripes and stars have to be on blue background
