From Rohan Davis' "Europe's Favorite Scapegoat - The Romani (Gypsy is a slur)"

"Eastern Europe had serfdom not slavery therefore Eastern Europe is a victim too, actually", "Black people were not discriminated against because of their color or race but because of their way of life" okay Romani understander.

OP's reply goes hard.

The way to activate the Hitler particle present in every European is to mention the Romani.

Oh sorry, fixed it.

an amerikkan in a racist competition when the eurocuck pulls out their secret weapon of Roma hating: squidward-nervous

The people who gave us eugenics, colonization and the holocaust: if none of us liked these people, it must be their fault!

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 26 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There are people in my family who are still fuming about when a Romani stole laundry from my great grandma's yard 80 years ago and cite that as an example of why they're bad

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

I had a fash cousin who would keep bringing up this story he heard from an uncle or something about how "the g-- stole grandpa's rowboat from the side yard in 1972" or something like that. Deeply unserious.

“I lost a pair of shoes in 1985, must’ve been a g** that stole them.”

euros really like racism when it comes to romani people huh yikes-1yikes-2yikes-3

[–] Super_Lumalo@hexbear.net 24 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The racism against the romani is so bad, some people do not know who the fuck you are talking about unless you use the slur. And to them the word isn't even a slur, it's just "who they are".

[–] Samsuma@lemmy.ml 17 points 3 weeks ago

Literally this. I can't have a coherent discussion about Romanis with my relatives without it devolving to a racist cliches lightning round.

[–] Pieplup@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Can confirm, I didn't evne think they were a people i thought they were some mythological race or something. TBF though i grow up in america where romani arent' really a thing.

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah when I was young I thought it just meant a particular flavor of traveling performer, maybe with some fortune telling thrown in for good measure. More like an old timey version of a carnie than an ethnic group.

[–] combat_brandonism@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

There are Romani in the US, and they are incarcerated and beaten by police at the same rate as natives and black people

[–] Pieplup@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I didn't mean there aren't any in the us. I more meant atleast hwere i grew up the midwest there isn't enough to the point most people will have never interacted with a romani.

[–] combat_brandonism@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

fair enough. the people that have are indistinguishable from Europeans the way they talk though

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 20 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Without going into the history of the term's use, the origin of "Gypsy" is "Egyptian". Europeans just can't help being fucking weird about this shit. "Yeah you look like you're from [Area thousands of miles from your actual homeland] I should call you that" Like imagine if we started calling Belgians Armenians, or Germans... well I suppose "Huns".

[–] RomCom1989@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Well,the British did do that

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago

Yes that was the joke.

The classic case of all Europeans raising their right arm in a diagonal direction when Romanis are mentioned.

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

Libs would still tell you about how Europe is a paradise with no racism and then they would start a racist rant when you mention Romani people. I have seen that on reddit-logo at least and wouldn't be surprised if I saw it on some of those lemmy instances.

[–] krolden@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 weeks ago

I was watching the Bernie rally yesterday and he called them gypsies as well.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 4 points 3 weeks ago

Damn that last comment is literally just the nazi "well if someone got kicked out of 130 bars, whose fault would you think it is?"
