100% the return to work order has nothing to do with national security or the union not arguing on good faith. The Canadian government wants money. That's it. US airtraffic controls need to take notice. Remember people, if your government gives you a unlawful order you don't have to follow it because, you are the government. Collectively we make up our governments. That's how governments work. Yes there may be some short term pain (layoffs, fines, imprisonment, etc.) but the long term pain is greater if you don't stand up for what's right.

For sure. Biden broke the railroad workers strike and was a "pro-labor" president. If a strike doesn't make business sweat, labor has no cards.

Fucking good. What's the point of a union if the government is just gonna force everyone back to work?

Everyone knows that corporations never negotiate in good faith. You can't just force the workers to accept terms they don't agree with.

On the other hand, transporting strike-breakers to another star system pays considerably well.Endless Sky

Thankfully I haven't required to unionise to get a little less unfair wage.

I don't know any of the particulars but what if the union advised it's workers to only do the paid work? I don't see how they can be held to account for not doing unpaid work if they all refuse together.

The sticking point in their negotiations is just that - they don't get paid for the work they do when the plane is not in the air.

I think theyre saying just dont do that work.

[–] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 1 week ago (5 children)

But they literally can't. Have you seen the average person try to put their suitcase in the overhead bin? Completely ignoring the sign that is plastered on the door and the back to put it on its side?

Have you seen the average person try to find their seat, swearing up and down that they purchased extra leg room only to be really seated next to the lavatory?

The plane would never take off.

Flight crew should be paid the moment they cross security. At that point they've badged in and they should be considered to be at work.

[–] MycelialMass@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago

This would effectively stop the flights yes, thats the point. It shows the labor their doing is necessary, and theyre the only ones who can do it. So they should be paid becuase thats what a fucking job is.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

Exactly, the planes will never take off.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They do pre boarding outside the plane. They can't even load the plane if no one does that.

[–] osaerisxero@kbin.melroy.org 13 points 1 week ago

I do belive that will demonstrate the point

[–] Rozauhtuno@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago

The plane would never take off.

If planes can't take off without this essential work, then the people doing it need to be compensated for it.

Otherwise the plane can stay on the fucking ground.

Counterpoint, everyone doing hourly work should be paid starting the moment they begin their commute, plus half an hour of prep time.
