Meanwhile On Grad

Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

lemmy.world had difficulty handling new account registration when I tried moving from Reddit in June 2023, so I tried to find/join other instances. People said "it doesn't matter which instance you join."

Oh it definitely mattered.

I'm only somewhat familiar with lemmy.ml. What are the other two?

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

The ones that they made after they started getting defederated from.

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 15 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

lemmygrad.ml is just another lemmy instance, but smaller and more specifically tankie than lemmy.ml

hexbear.net is a bit of a funny one. It was its own thing that was created when /r/chapotraphouse on reddit got banned, so it developed quite a separate culture. It is now federated with some Fediverse instances, but when it first federated there was a pretty severe culture clash that led to a lot of defederation (like, even besides the political disagreements). It is theoretically left-unity instead of Marxist-Leninist but I don't see a lot of evidence for that in practice

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 12 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Hexbear is extremely tankie

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 11 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It is, I just wanted to make the distinction between "tankie in practice but non-tankie leftism is technically acceptable" vs grad's "so tankie that they literally put a tank on the instance icon"

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 3 points 18 hours ago

It's really not

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 6 points 19 hours ago

All three are Tankie instances, most of the posts in this community come from these three instances

I made the mistake of joining .ml 4 years ago, because I didn't know. Then moved to world and now I'm here.

[–] Ofiuco@piefed.ca 7 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Fmhy ➡️ dbzer0 ➡️ cafe ➡️ piefed.ca

Definitively my best move was joining piefed, being able to actually block instances (unlike lemmy where you still get their posts via crossposts even if your instance defederated them) made it a little better in general.

[–] ThorrJo@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 9 hours ago

allegedly, actually functional instance blocking is shipping in Lemmy soon.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 4 points 16 hours ago

Yup, same here, but now I'm testing the waters on PieFed. Maybe it's ~~turtles~~ instance hopping all the way down.

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 7 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

this thing's adorable, what is that

[–] Nebula@fedia.io 7 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It is by artist "sherchle". I don't think it is from a tv show or anything like that. Oh and the car is from pui pui Molcar. I thought you meant the turtle

[–] goat@sh.itjust.works 3 points 19 hours ago

pui pui Molcar

i want these

[–] FundMECFSResearch@lemmy.cafe 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Similar to you ahah

ML -> World -> and now I’m using a few different instances to organise my feeds until voyager support for piefed is less buggy and they dev adds the custom feeds feature

[–] Nebula@fedia.io 5 points 19 hours ago

Nice. I am pretty happy with mbin, as it kinda is an all in one thing. The only "negatives" are that not a lot of people use it and AFAIK you can't crosspost. Also the top instance is application only.

[–] Million@lemmy.zip 9 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Started from the bottom now we're here. 🎶

[–] metallic_substance@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Are these dipshits still a problem around here? Since I joined, I've blocked hundreds of communities, instances, and users. I don't see them anymore

[–] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 hours ago

How do you guys get so many negative interactions? I've been on Lemmy for more than a year and I haven't blocked any community, instance or user. It's still enjoyable. I see the occasional Russia / China shill who gets downvoted to hell and that's it.

[–] Narauko@lemmy.world 9 points 18 hours ago

I just recently got temp banned for .ml again for saying I didn't like Stalin because of the purges and gulags and cult of personality dictatorship, so make of that what you will. Either that or just using the word tankie is treated as hate speech because it was the infamous "Reason: Rule 1" with no further context. I was actually having an enjoyable and possibly productive conversation about communist theory too, but apparently that's not allowed.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My first month on lemmy a mod on .ml sent me a death threat and banned me from a community for basically stating that given the option between Trump and Kamala I voted Kamala.

So that was a fun interaction

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

How many times did they use the word Capitalism and Liberal?

[–] socsa@piefed.social 8 points 19 hours ago
[–] gabbath@lemmy.world 12 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Holy trinity of tankie attempts to save a losing argument

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (5 children)

The ML admins are the developers and maintainers of Lemmy codebase and hosts of Join Lemmy. I have a feeling it's gonna be real hard to get rid of them.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)
[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

I've been procrastinating that for a while now, probably time to move over to piefed.world
