I recently tried setting up my old Wacom Bamboo tablet, but getting the drivers working on modern MacOS and Windows is a nightmare

[–] oplkill@lemmy.world 10 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Its funny because in Linux wacom bamboo works out of box

Well that's Linux for ya. I boot into Linux and Windows occasionally, but driver compatibility for Photoshop and Blender via Wine isn't perfect.

Also when you own electronic musical instruments. Tons of librarian software for synths doesn't run on Apple silicon. My 2005 flagship synth can't talk to my Mac mini.

Shit like this is why I'll never understand why Macs are so god damn popular in the music industry. Meanwhile my trusty old Asus gaming laptop from 2012 still works with all my DJ and production hardware just fine. It's amazing at its job so I see no reason to upgrade. I have the Ryzen 7000 desktop with a 4090 if I need a bit more horsepower for gaming or video editing or whatever.

Windows wasn't any better in this case. I grabbed an old win7 laptop and it wouldn't run there either, but this time it was Korg's drivers and Windows' flawed notion of how to MIDI that kept me out of the promised land. SYSEX still works on both platforms though.

I'll note that on both MacOS and Linux the synth in question is ID'd, addressed and usable via USB midi with no additional drivers, installations or scripts.

Macs are popular in music because Apple pushed hard to get creatives on board for decades and it worked. I have a Mac because doing music stuff on Linux had me fixing tools more than playing music and I'm sure as shit not gonna run win11.

You can turn off auto-updates you know. Old MacOS versions continue to get security patches for years afterwards.

I have a 13 years old macbook with mx Linux on it. Works great. Faster than whatever last osx version it supported.

Also have a 13 year old macbook air with LMDE, at some point they're basically useless without Linux.

I used my first Wacom tablet for a long time. 15 years or so?

It used serial port. Kids these days often don't know about serial ports, I guess.

Linux support was rock solid though, all the way. (Edit: however, I think toward the end they basically said "serial tablets are unsupported now, but you can try to enable the support and recompile and see if it still works")

Or your 3 year old iPhone or iPad...

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

iPhones and iPads get updates for ages. The iPhone XR can update to iOS 18 and it released almost 7 years ago. I don’t think it will be supported by the next OS, but that’s still pretty damn good for a modern smartphone.

They get updates, that will gank your device and make it unusable. Ask me how I know this...

Are you talking about the underclocking?

There was a generation that included many faulty batteries that caused undervolting. An undervolted CPU simply stops, causing the phones to shut off. The solution for those phones was to detect the battery lifecycle and underclock the CPU so it wouldn’t undervolt. For any phone affected, Apple offered extremely discounted (if not free) battery replacements, which would restore the CPU to original clock speed.

I was an Android user at the time, and people were accusing Apple of planned obsolescence and decrying the underclocking, but it seemed like a solid solution to a faulty battery issue to me.

Now, iOS tracks your battery health. If the battery has less than 80% battery health in the first, like, six months, it means a faulty battery and they will replace it for free.

No, I'm talking about my Gen 1 iPad that picked up an update which completely brought it to it's knees because Apple apparently forgot how much RAM it had.

[–] TheRealKuni@piefed.social 2 points 10 hours ago

Oh yeah, the gen 1 iPad was awesome right up until it wasn’t.

[–] ifItWasUpToMe@lemmy.ca 5 points 19 hours ago

The gen 1 iPad just sucked. For most apple products you should avoid gen 1 and gen 2. 3 seems to always be a big jump, and lasts longer.

They used to but this hasn't been the case for a long time now.
