Grass is dumb. I want a clover or moss bed.

[–] MysteriousSophon21@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

Clover lawns are acutally amazing - they need way less water, fix nitrogen in the soil, and the bees love em when they flower.

Alsike clover would like to know your location...

I hadn't heard of this guy before, but he's really entertaining and educational. Thanks for sharing.

Kill your lawn needs to be the next 'Kill your TV' graffiti

These are mostly California natives: poppies, penstemons, fuchsia, baby blue eyes, monkeyflower, five-spot, tidy tips, salvia...

Remember to check that the wildflowers you plant are your locals, not something that is invasive in your area, or might confuse the fuck out of the migrating butterflies.

You know that there is native grass, right?

[–] stray@pawb.social 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, I really don't care for the blanket demonization of a plant family which is an important part of many ecosystems. Grasses are so much more than suburban lawns.

Fuck grass. Anything grass can do, other plants can do better. Except maybe c4 photosynthesis, but that hasn't been necessary so far.

Yeah, because fuck biodiversity.

Let's just kill all the native grass and plant the "best" plant everywhere because it's objectively "better".

Yeah, because fuck biodiversity.

Have you ever seen how grass grows? It is the exact opposite of biodiversity. Even the grazing herbivores who usually eat grass stand to benefit from the eradication of grass and its replacement with a more diverse assortment of vegetation. Even the animal exploitation industry's own publications explain the nutritional benefits of leguminous and other non-grass "forage" and attempt to calculate the amount of grass that can be included in the animals' diets (in order to save money) without compromising weight gain. I have personally seen cows and goats go out of their way, crossing several hectares of pasture, to consume whatever non-grass vegetation they could find (often baby fruit trees) rather than eat the grass available to them.

So yes, let's kill all the "native" grass and plant a diverse array of trees, shrubs, palms, forbs, vines, and herbaceous ground-covers. Everyone in the world would benefit except perhaps the ruling class and a few other parasites.

Yeah, let's not kill an entire class of native plants and replace it with artificially introduced plants. That's gonna go perfectly well because human intervention like that usually goes so well.

Well duh. Of course they prefer to eat something else once in a while after eating grass all day.

I'm all for planting more native other plants in gardens or whatever and maybe some more native plants in nature. But ripping up an entire native ecosystem that has been there for millions of years because you dislike it is utterly deranged.

[–] wolfyvegan@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Allegedly. We can't know that for sure, and honestly, I have serious doubts.

[–] oasis@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You think grass came from an alien planet or something?

[–] wolfyvegan@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Or has been so extensively selected by humans (intentionally or unintentionally) that it no longer resembles the original wild form. Either way, the world would be a more pleasant place without grass.

[–] oasis@piefed.social 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Do you seriously think that lawns are the only grasses?

Do you live in a desert or something?

Grass grows in the wild everywhere. Have you never every in your life been in a field or a forrest or even outside a city or a suburb?

[–] wolfyvegan@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I live in the rainforest. There is zero grass here except in the places that have been disturbed by humans.

[–] oasis@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

Okay fair enough. But it's different elsewhere.

Grass fields are extremely natural here. There is often also grass under the trees but that depends on the types of trees and how dense they are.

I hate the feeling of grass touching me. I'm reluctant to even rip it out by hand, as that would require touching it. I get at the roots with the machete and dislodge it that way so that I only need to touch it briefly in order to fling it onto the neighbour's land. Even then, I feel like I need to scrub myself afterwards.
