I overshot, went down in what I thought were reasonable steps and still never made it onto the charts. It isn't a big ball, but the elastics are pretty small too, right...?

Lucked out by guessing under then over, and nailed it on the 3rd guess. Counted the number of bands visible, then estimated the number of layers, and interpolated between 1 and the number in the outer layer to get the number in each layer.
Stumbled upon this in all, that was fun!
