The story was dumb. The relationship between Hayes and the technical director felt so forced and unnecessary.
I appreciate all the little details they showed โ the fan service as you mentioned.
Visuals were stunning as expected.

Well, the story is not realistic at all. But at least it was believable to me, as in: it's not completely impossible.
Combining tactical rule breaking and unsportsmanship with the most unusual accidents and incidents that have happened in F1 in recent years is.. a choice. It makes good entertainment.
The story of Brad Pitt's character himself and the rookie as well I actually enjoyed watching. Was surprised by that.
Good stuff
Not good stuff
"It sets a precedent not only in F1, but also for all the young kids that are watching us, F1 drivers, drive and conduct ourselves. They've seen today how a 4 time world champion behaves." ~ Lewis after Seb rammed him in Baku 2017.
I was surprised at the blatant inaccuracies in it after all that chat about getting the right sound for 5th gear etc etc.
But agree, I was there for the racing footage mainly, which was good as expected.
The story is a joke though honestly, it's not a "good" movie. One criticism I agree with is that brad pitt's character doesn't go on any journey at all really, he has no arc at all.
They had the pieces on the board to make a fine story I think, it just seems like there were multiple cliques within the writing team and they couldn't agree on a vision so the narrative gets pulled in different directions.
If Brad Pitt could have gotten over himself and not demanded to be the underdog hero who gets the girl and wins the race we might have gotten something actually interesting.
I pretty much agree with you: I was blown away by the driving sequences (which are very reminiscent of 1966 Grand Prix), but god, the writing was terrible.
I winced so many times at the inconsistencies regarding rules and strategy (which is baffling given Ruth Buscombe, Bernie Collins and Will Buxton are credited as consultants, as well as Lewis and Toto as Executive Producers!). The blatant cheating from Pitt's character is stupid, appalling and neither the driver and his team faced any consequences, it should have earned him at least a black flag.
And the characters... they are all so shallow and their arcs are static until the penultimate race. In that aspect, Gran Turismo was a better driver movie.
