That's not so far off from Pornhub's Year In Review 2024 that had the Linux share of the desktop space at 5.1%.

Just sayin.

I would absolutely not use Windows for pornhub. There's a 99% chance Satya is watching you masturbate.

Some people might be into that. Don't kink shame.

[–] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 months ago

Fuck, guess I'm switching back to windows!

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I would venture to say a very large portion of Pornhub consumption is on mobile.

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

The stats are published. It's close to 90%. The 5% linux is more like 0.5% overall.

I remember the year was 2009 and people were joking about porn on mobile... who is laughing now lol

I was in the Navy at the time, so it was actually "porn on iPod."

[–] CrazyLikeGollum@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I mean if that's the case I'll switch back to Windows just to remind Satya of what his company's name truly means.

Interesting. How was this data extracted?
AFAIK Linux is not doing well in China, and China has been known to skew the Steam stats a lot before. China uses bots heavily on Steam for mining in games.
Anyways it's cool that we can see Linux is doing well on Steam now, despite influential factors like China.

It would be interesting to see the amount of purchases made on Linux vs other operating systems. I think that's the number that counts more than anything else.

mining in games

What do they mine? Is it just farming progress to sell accounts later or something else?

[–] FRYD@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 months ago

Pretty much. They also sell gold, crafting materials, and items for real money. If you spend a bit of time playing just about any mmo, you’ll see bots and gold sellers all the time.

[–] sevon@lemmy.kde.social 16 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I'm guessing mining for lootboxes and items. Never underestimate people's ability find money in an absurd waste of resources.

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 2 months ago

In a lot of mmos, people will farm in game resources and sell them for real money.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Yeah farming or mining whatever you can do.
They sell everything for real money, complete accounts with upgraded characters, or rare items or whatever has value in a game.

It's a random sampling of devices. That's why looking at the English only numbers are more consistent. Sometimes the randomness is heavily skewed to China, and sometimes has very little China. See here: https://www.gamingonlinux.com/steam-tracker/#languagesanchor

[–] lime@feddit.nu 14 points 2 months ago

probably because the internationalisation efforts are usually worse

[–] Goten@piefed.social 13 points 2 months ago

we didnt get more % linux users but one thing is interesting: on the steam hardware survey windows lost % in all eurolanguages! it gained in trukish, chinese and other asian languages. so the boycott is having an effect. feel free to post this info anywhere :)

[–] rfr_Foglia@feddit.it 10 points 2 months ago

This is similar to the Linux 5,1% market share registered by Pornhub last year:

Sales numbers ($) by platform would be interesting to see too.

The metric developers really care about.

[–] Clearwater@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I work with/in (giggity) indie devs. One dev I work with has a slack bot spamming out sales data daily which contains breakdowns by platform.

For his indie game, across the last 7 days it's roughly 94.3% Windows, 2.0% Mac, and 3.7% Linux. The game has native builds for all 3 platforms, including Mac's ARM chips.

[–] Malix@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

While I do agree, I dunno how meaningful or realistic data it would offer when some users switch between platforms.

Thank to then activating proton on linux i think i will switch to linux. I just love playing AAA games to much.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 10 points 2 months ago

Only AAA games that don't work on linux are pretty much anti cheat slop.

[–] Scolding7300@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They said: THANK TO THEN ACTIVATING PROTON ON LINUX I THINK I WILL SWITCH TO LINUX. I JUST LOVE PLAYING AAA GAMES TO MUCH.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Ah very clear now

[–] SirHery@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Yeah sorry. I meant i will probably switch to linux because they activated proton for most Linux distros(or all, im not really versed in this). I didn't switch yet because so many AAA games didn't work natively on steam and i like to play them. Hope this is a bit more clear 😅

[–] rfr_Foglia@feddit.it 1 points 1 month ago

FYI you could have activated it yourself in the settings with a signle toggle, but now I think its on by default, it's even easier
