glasses-on My fucking putrid father said he was glad the new neighbors were "not from the city" when he only knew what they looked like (white). Dude, you're not fooling me, I know you're a fucking nazi dipshit. You're not hiding it here and you're not hiding it when you keep referring to animals that breed in the wild exclusively as "sl*ts". Also thinks it's normal to talk about asking ever delivery driver at work "where they're from." glasses-off

But I hear how he talks to other people not me and he's definitely trying to hide it, but he's too fucking stupid. Meanwhile if I tell fellow family members they just shake it off.

They may not be successfully hiding it from me, but they are successfully hiding it from themself.

Yep. They like to claim to be "in the middle" and have no allegiance to any political wing, while also just spouting off the most generic right wing stuff imaginable. One time I defended student protests against education fees, prompting one of them to ask me if I was a terrorist for giving one of the tamest defenses imaginable. Years later, that same one compared me to ISIS. First time, I just laughed it off because I couldn't take the question seriously and the second time I just ignored it.

This and "I'm as left as they come, but" are the surest indicators that you're about to hear some absolutely awful opinions.

I have a brother who watches shit like OAN. I once overheard him telling my parents about that synagogue tunnel story. One time, my family was discussing the French Revolution and he kept arguing that the "lawyers and bankers" tricked the "inner city poors" into rising up against the "good Christian leaders." Even my center-right history buff brother pushed back and later agreed about the fash vibes.

There's so many red flags that he's deep into fash shit but he still acts normal and friendly to me (I'm closeted towards him and my parents). Most of my family can see it but my parents both don't know the signs and don't want to see it, so it's a very uncomfortable dynamic, and I feel like he knows how to take fascist rhetoric and rebrand it to be amenable to my parents. It's like a PVP disabled zone.

He's a veteran who came back and started doing meth to cope, and recently either started doing it again or just went off his meds because he went from standard levels of paranoid schizophrenia that all fascists have to the level of paranoid schizophrenia where you start making actionable threats in a group chat while on parole so for now he's in a jail cell. So that's cool, the world is safer with him there.

lawyers and bankers

Not every day I learn a new, disgusting euphemism for "the jews"

[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

“one of those new york banker types”

Oof, I think I've used some version of this to mean "NY finance bro". I hope the person I was talking to doesn't think I'm a nqzi

"east coast"

Do crackers ever see the irony of their antisemitic slanders, and every single antisemitic stereotype can more accurately be attributed to white people? White people practically brag about being the things they accuse Jews of being.

[–] Zuzak@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago

Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

If you pressed him on it, he'd just say, "Who said anything about Jews? Why are you bringing Jews into this? What, you just automatically assume that if someone's a sinister, manipulative puppetmaster, they have to be Jewish? That sounds kinda racist if you ask me." I cannot describe the degree of bad faith this person uses, like his brain operates in permanent bad faith. My center-right brother mentioned that Robespierre was called, "The Incorruptible" (because he was a true believer) and also, "The Angel of Death," and my fash brother started attacking him, like, "Oh, so you think Robespierre was an 'incorruptible angel,' why do you love Robespierre so much?" I'm 100% sure he didn't even know who Robespierre was before the conversation.

"Veterans" all deserve to die unless they actually changed their views anyways

[–] Zuzak@hexbear.net 16 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I always try to remind myself that all the suffering he's caused me and my family, the worst trauma we've experienced, is a fraction of the harm he inflicted on families overseas.

[–] stink@lemmygrad.ml 19 points 6 days ago

My partner's cousin happily exclaimed how his buddy killed the oldest man in Afghanistan and how he was able to claim worthy defense during the military court trial.

This was during Christmas dinner, I'd say 95% of veterans deserve a painful death

[–] duderium@hexbear.net 29 points 6 days ago

“Let’s not talk about politics” means “I don’t want my liberal or fascist views to be challenged by a communist.”

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 33 points 6 days ago

my fascist family is proud and doesnt hide at all.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 26 points 6 days ago

I think that the only deeply held belief for my family is that our country will never amount to anything if we stopped depending on the US so all the leftists are lunatics. Every other thing is not really important in political discourse in my country, so even though people become fascists all the time (particularly christofascists) you usually can talk them down from it pretty quickly as long as you stay away from the colonialism issue. They'll straight up say being gay should be illegal one minute, and 2 baby's first secularism sentences later they'll be like "yeah I can see why it would make sense for HRT to be free." It's funny what happens when propaganda about most other things isn't that strong.

Anyway, people don't bother hiding it, either.

AFAIK my dad never said a slur in his life, but damn did he not want affordable housing or mass transit anywhere near him.

[–] boiledfrog@hexbear.net 24 points 6 days ago

My dad recently told me that "we should have immigration policies like the usa" and I'm not gonna lie, it really fucked with me. We were never really close and all that but I never thought he would have said something like that, I just can't understand how anyone could think like that if you consider immigrants to be human beings trying to get a worthy life for themselves (and often enough for their family), but I guess he just sees them as a nuisance.

Also he implied the usa had better healthcare then Cuba but that one was just funny to melmayo

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 17 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Reminds me of a conversation I had recently.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Lol you didn't even call him "racist" just "boomer brained"

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 7 points 6 days ago

Yeah, he walked right into that one himself.

Nah most of my family either spews out the slurs straight out or even do it intentionally to "trigger me" and as a joke. Unlike libs I do in fact make it a problem. But thats just different class dynamics.

[–] MantisToboggon@lazysoci.al 14 points 6 days ago (2 children)

all my family has died. 😞

[–] BanSwitch2Buyers@hexbear.net 18 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Withholding sympathy until I know their political alignments.

The only family member I truly liked, my grandmother, died in 2019. Or at least she was the nicest to me, the most left-wing, and harmed me the least (basically none at all). Literally the meanest thing she ever did was she saw me reading the Full Metal Alchemist manga and asked what I was reading and kinda' gave the front and back covers a once-over and went "this looks stupid" for some reason. No idea what that was about because she was never judgmental like that before or after and wasn't even that mean-spirited about it.

Are you the girl from Conan’s old timey baseball visit?

[–] mayo_cider@hexbear.net 8 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Luckily no, my aunt recently lost in court so it's on public record (and everyone knew years before and made it clear they knew)

[–] inTheShadowOf@hexbear.net 8 points 6 days ago

A sibling definitely tried, but eventually I cut off the whole "family" and that was the end of that. No time to waste on shitty people. His parents are even worse.

The US is as irredeemable as nazi germany in 1944. It needs to be invaded, dismantled and put under international tutelage for at least a hundred years. A lot of those people are too far gone and need to be erased, it takes time but we can easily make new humans that aren't grown into fascist incubators.
